Thats how I did my slide collar. Works mint,
^^^^^So....do I need the accuator housing that fits between the tube and the diff once the "gear" is removed with the screwdrivers, or will my original, manual hub arm fit into the diff?? I'm trying to do a 4.10 to 4.56 in my '92 22re. I have a mechanic buddy who is going to put a new rear ring and pinion in, but I'm trying to do the front first.

No you don't need that housing unless you have add

Related question.... I'm wondering if there are any tricks I should know about prior to pulling the 4.10 currently in my truck? As far as i can tell it's pretty straight forward...can i just do it with the wheels still on...just unbolt from the frame, driveshaft and cv's...not necessarily in that order? Do I need to drop the sway bar? It's my daily currently and don't really want to have it down for more than an evening.

So, I have manual hubs and I'm swapping in a front third that had ADD. I've got the long tube off the new diff and can't get the "gear" to pull off that the "two screwdriver trick" is supposed to pull...I also have the front of the diff off and cant pry it out from the inside. Can I just reef on this f'r? I don't want to break anything, being that this is the third I am planning on putting in my rig when I'm done.

I had to put a screwdriver into the diff and pound on it to pop it out. It's just a c-clip retaining it so you can't really mess anything up

Now that it's out, where the hell is the C clip? My intuition tells me I should try to retrieve it before putting on my manual driver's side tube....don't want it bouncing around in the diff somewhere.

Turns out the previous owner put the manual hubs in....how was I to know? Anyway, I have 2 diffs with the actuator on them, and I'm not sure how my 4X4 was working now that I have it all apart. The fork was not locked in place by anything, now I just want to get my ducks in a row before putting it back together. Does the slide collar need to be locked over the gear that I pounded out with a screwdriver...I guess that would make it slid back toward the diff? I suppose I can put a hose clamp in to lock the fork in place, but I want to make sure I don't have to pull it all apart again if I get it together and it doesn't work, it was kind of a PITA. When i pulled it all apart the vacuum hoses and elec connection were still hooked up, and as I said the fork still slides freely. How is it that my 4x4 worked? As you all can tell I'm a total newb and a little hesitant to mess anything up.

Also, if I'm not touching the passenger side of the diff do I need to think about the oil seal? The fork housing is supposed to fill with gear oil right? Similarly, can I just pound the driver's side tube assembly back into the diff with the existing c-clip on it, or is that something I have to replace?

Thanks in advance.

did you lock the add collar with just that strap? ive got a 93' v6, im switching my rear and front to 5.56 for some extra power and the part place hooked me up with an add front diff, i have manual hubs on my truck though. this is all new to me, shes my first truck. can someone give me a rundown on how to keep the manual hubs and remove the add? is it just that little gear i need to remove with screwdrivers and the non add shaft being locked into place of the other? the vacuum tubes are whats confusing me the most. any help is needed thanks

No, stop, if you don't have add on your truck take off all the add side junk off the diff including the stub shaft and swap over the non add long side axle and tube you already have. All done nothing else needed.
