Are you keeping stock exhaust on there, going with the header....??
You can go from stock exhaust right into 2.25, and then, yes, you would want the rest to be at least 2.25 or bigger, otherwise you'll create backflow that wouldn't make sense. If you're keeping stock intake, AFM set up, head/valves, I'm not sure you'd want to go bigger on the exhaust. Ted, from Engnbldr, did a GREAT write up on this on 4x4wire.com. You'll find it without too much trouble. What he said was that "He found that the stock set up was really well thought out and effective, even when adding some ponies with other mods." Some disagree with the ''stock exhaust after the mods" theory he has...but most of the pro's agree when it comes to just working on the exhaust of a stock motor, etc.
If you are staying stock, you could just put on a nice new cat and more aggressive muffler and call it a day. If you're putting on a performance head and Cold Air Intake, ect..... (oversize valves, ported and polished, big bore throttle body, etc.), then it wouldn't hurt to open up your exhaust to 2.25 straight through to the back. Most all of them agree that "2.25 is the max for the 22re, mods or not". Any more and you wont have enough backpressure.

i was thinking of some mods
headers, cam, maybe porting the valves. maybe more down the road but that may be it for now.
so im guess an exhaust upgrade is warranted?
of the 4985734 threads ive read on people putting on heads is it generally assumed the exhaust size changed as well?
sorry if this is an incredibly boring basic question.
edit:
and if the cat needs to be replaced when bumping up the exhaust size why are there so many cat back exhaust systems and like NO kits that include cats?

Far as the head, I would leave that to the pro's like Engnbldr, or LCE....but that's just me. If you're a slick machinist and have all the specs, know exactly what valves to use, deck clearance you'll need, etc..... then I wouldn't tell ya what NOT to do, lol. You would be porting the intake and exhaust ports, valve seats, etc., btw. I think engnbldr does the whole head with a cam of your choice for around 580$, shipped. LCE? HEHEHE, not so cheap. Maybe 1,100$? Don't quote me on that, could be less.
Headers will not warrant expanding the pipes necessarily, unless you're popping in some 2.25 exit headers. However, if you're doing the head, w/261 or bigger cam, maybe a Cold Air intake, header with 2.25" out pipe, then I would due the exhaust as well. I went 2.25" with some decent mods and I MOST DEFINITELY felt the difference, even before I popped in a more aggressive cam.
The way to get the most out of that pipe set up(2.25") is to put in an oversized port head with os/valves, 261-268 CAM, Big Bore Throttle Body(that's argued about as to whether it's really necessary...and IT AINT cheap, lol), Cold Air Intake and 4 into 1 or other aggressive header. That will run you around 600$ for the head(unless you do it???), 300$ or so for the Throttle Body, 200$ for the Cold Air Intake set up from LCE, 300$ for the exhaust, just TO the CAT from LCE, maybe around 300$ for the CAT-plus-installation(if you're in CA, the CAT is around 180$...so less if you're somewhere else), around 100$-150$ for the Muffler(that 300$ would include the welding of it in and the CAT in, but not include the cost of the MUFFLER).

Then, they have a power kit, which I think includes the Big Bore Throttle Body, Cold Air, Header............
http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGe...4-A731A422C546
The Head, Brand new and beefy, if you'd rather save some money and piece it together yourself, is available here, WITH the CAM of your choice......
http://engnbldr.com/head_shop.htm
I am NOT endorsing or trying to sell you anything... I just had the same trouble, and decided to go with the LCE header and Cold Air system... Muffler through Borla on sale, CAT from Magnaflow through O'reily around 30$ cheaper than the Magnaflow site(go figure, eh? lol), ...then get the head parts and CAM from Engnbldr, as well as the Pistons, bearings, rings, etc. I had to replace the Crank, a bad timing cover out, steel guide timing chain, and had the intakes drop tanked. I did everything I could to try and save some money, without getting cheap.
PS> I hope you REALLY can be sure that your 'head guy' can do something like Engnbldr, with a brand new casting, etc., for a price like they offer. I think it's more like 530$ shipped for the Street RV head, with cam. Give Tod a call at engnbldr, he will NOT simply try to sell you anything. GREAT guy, ...just try not to take too much of his time, eh? lol.
Best wishes, whatever you decide to do.

Personally i'd just replace everything from headers back with stock sized piping. The new headers and new pipes will free up some more power without getting too expensive. Also it allows you to put on the muffler of your choice for a different sound.

every where i read and all shops i talked to recomended 2.25" pipe for the 22re and 3vze. i have a 2.5" pipe on my 3.0 and couldn't tell a difference in power. i have literally dozens and dozens of differnt exhaust set ups on my truck so if you have any questions feel free to ask. lol

i have stock exhaust from the manifold to the cat. then i have a magnaflow hi flow cat, 2.25in exhaust, to a glasspack, to 2.25in out. i coudl afeel a smidgen of difference. and it only cost me right a 300 installed. had it on my truck fro about 1.5years no problems

i have a 22r. is there a difference in what kind of back pressure management you want between the 2 engines?

Hahaha.... well there ya go.
Honestly?...that removes the Cold Air Intake from the picture, Throttle body and well, the rest, you sure can use the Street Head and do an exhaust system if you wanted. That's a clean truck, ORD! A guy on here named XXXtreme has brought out some ponies in his 22r, and I'm sure if you read his "Faq" tags in his sig, he'd probably give you a thought or two on it.
With my header and exhaust I felt more off the line get up..... with the new head and CAM, along with the exhaust, I feel a difference up the hills, FOR SURE! I couldn't get up the 14HWY pass over 50mph in the past....now I can do 65 no problem. It's like it gave me a half a gear back. (our rigs are not know for being GREAT on the hills, lol). BTW, I pulled that 65mph on that same hill with a full load of gear, several hundred pounds. So, I can only speak by my own experience, and I like the set up I have. You'll figure out the right one for you and your budget, One.... trust me, just be patient and get all the review info, etc., that you can, before you buy, ya know?

LCE headers will connect directly to your stock cat.
What size tires and gears are you running? If you have 33's and still running stock gears, you would see more improvement from a regear then you would a set of headers. Just saying.

will the thorley connect right to it as well?
ive got 33s with 4.88 gearing. kiyo do you think headers would not do anything to improve further? im not looking to make a race truck but ive been leaning to thorleys because of their low end benefits.

why do there have to be 314857623894572389475982345078 different cat converters?
ive looked at like 10 different websites and i have no idea which one im supposed to get.
ugh.
why are some 60 bucks and some are 200?
ive heard of a "hi-flow" cat but non i have come across seem to actually be named that.
can someone give me a tip on this?
i need it to fit to a thorley and 2.25 tubing.

Well, you have a good combo for gears and tires. If you were 33's and 4.10's I would have said start at the gears. Sounds like you are good there.
I went with the cat from LCE.
http://www.toyotacatalog.net/M1WebGe...C-C1F67756FC4A
Its just a magnaflow 2.25" cat that LCE cuts down and welds flanges to so it fits exactly into the stock spot. Made it easy though. And at 120 bucks, its not ungodly expensive compared to other places.

whats wrong with this?

i like 60 dollars more than 120.
aaaaaaand
can i just ditch the cat if i dont need to pass emissions?
does that make the exhaust a lot louder?
will i have bad dreams about mother nature trying to chop my glands off for spewing poison into the air?
wait i have those dreams already....
