Excessive Valve tapping

hey guys, i just rebuilt my 91 yota p/u and after getting it running (not after having starting probs and egr issues not to mention fuel injector leaks) I went to have the valves rechecked because it had started making a loud tapping sound unusually louder then normal anyways, The people I took it too said they where real loose and after they adjusted the valves it sounded fine for awhile but after a week of driving and on the freeway i notice some power loss and the tapping came back but louder, i have since parked the truck but need to get it back on the road, any suggestions on what to look for first?

No its the stock cam, so after I posted this I looked under the hood and noticed the TPS adjustment screw was all the way out, i started the truck and adjusted it tilll it was idling correctly, then I disconnected the egr vacuum hose and capped it and guess what the tapping is gone..... can someone explain this to me?
