engine troubles

hey ya'll this is my first post along with my first toyota. i have got an 88 pickup up with 250,000 miles on it. i believe the headgasket is either blown or the head is cracked or warped. Does anyone know what i might be estimated, or how long it takes to pull off the head and check it out (pressure test).
Also, what would be the best thing to do. new head (if it is cracked) fix the head (if it is cracked) or should i just buy a rebuilt motor for 895 dollars with 0 miles.

thanks for any help or tips that anyone can give me

Welcome to Yotatech!

The first thing to do is put the specs of your vehicle in your signature, so they'll show up with every post. To help you out here with this question, we'll need to know which engine you have. Other useful info for your signature is: auto or standard, 2WD or 4WD, whether or not you have a lift installed, gear ratio, etc...

Run a compression and then a leakdown test. If any of the cylinders have low compression or have more than 15% loss, the head gasket may very well be your problem.

If it is the head gasket, I would probably just remove the head check it for warpage, if its warped, get it machined, new gasket and you'll be golden. Lot cheaper than new motor and probably a lot easier overall to perform. Just may have some difficulty if you lack the proper tools.
