Engine Swap??

Howdy,

i got an 86’ Pickup with a 22RE LCE headers & some exhaust.
It was rebuilt about 50,000 miles ago but it still gives me issues sometimes on the trail.
(Trouble starting, timing issues..)

I got a bunch of weight on the truck (bumper, winch, lumber rack, tire carrier etc..) so it
kinda moves slow.
I’m also swapping out the rear end for a Ford 9inch with lockers, disc brakes, & 5.29 gears.
Going with a 4 inch lift & 35’s.

**Should I just beef up the 22RE with racing components or swap for 3.4 or even a V8??
I def wanna keep it manual.
I need more power to wheel and make it up some dirt hills, tow a buddy who’s stuck, and
not go 35mph up the grapevine...

** I love this truck & will never get rid of it. Put too much $$ into it already. Ready to dump
more for more power. The less I spend the better obviously..

SHOULD I BEEF UP THE 22RE WITH RACING PARTS OR SWAP FOR A 3.4 OR EVEN A
SMALL BLOCK V8?!

Thanks!!

What size gears and tires are you running currently? What issues is the motor giving you?

If power is what you seek the the 3.4 is probably the best bang for the buck. If you can find a complete running donor truck it would be fairly easy and you could part out whats left to recoup costs. I think there is even someone that makes adaptation motor mounts for the 22re. Check out the engine swap section on this site. Lots of good information in there on that swap.

Stock gears & 31’ MT’s.
The engine idols weird sometimes. Revving up and then going back to normal every few seconds. Must be a timing thing.
There’s also a knock that I can definitely hear when I go past 3000 RPM.

OK thanks man I’ll definitely check that out. Appreciate the info!

Describe the surging please. Is it when you are idling with only the E-brake on? Does it only happen when you cone to a stop and have your foot on the brake? As to the knock. You say its only above 3k rpms. Can you tell where its coming from? Might be a loose valve and an easy fix.
4:10 gears and 31's us ok but kind of slow compared to the stock 29" tires and that gearing. Assuming you have a manual transmission the gear/tire ratios get you close to back to stock.
29"/4:10 stock
31"/4:56
33"/4:88
35"/5:29
Bigger? Then you need to do some research first.

Don't chuck a motor in it just yet
