E-Locker Complete Axle Swap?

I am looking for a complete e-locker axle. I could do the mods to retrofit one but would just prefer not to. Are there any differences I should be looking for when searching for an e-locker axle. Truck is a 96 4x4 v6

i think you should be fine if the housing is set up for leaf springs, you might even get disc brakes too if your lucky!! if it a 4runner axle you will have to cut off some brackets to make it fit but if i could get one for a good price i would go for it

uhhh,,,, I wouldn't, but you can do whatever you want...

If it's truck to truck, the spring perches are the same...

The axles are wider which is my personal preference not to use them, but the main reason is corrosion.

Along with the frame rot on the Dana units, I've seen, and it's been said the axles corrode to.

So I wouldn't be surprised if the chunks are Japan units and the axles themselves are Dana units.

Heck, they could both be Dana units but there is a difference between a cast and painted chunk of metal and painted and formed (poor quality) sheet steel.

If he is putting it on a '96, which is a Taco anyway, how is the axle width gonna come into play truck to truck? I thought the E-locker came on TRD Taco's/4Runner? not 3rd gen and earlier trucks with the exception of landcruisers....

as far as the rust issues, before paying for a complete axle housing inspect the axle thoroughly, they have had some rust issues along the tubes...

also if you find ORS e locker wiring harness's recommended during your research, keep in mind that ORS succumbed to the economy a couple of years ago....which sucks because He/they made some great stuff

it was in the taco forum, guess someone moved it.

i thought, but can't find any info to support that the e-locker could be fit into an 8.4" housing. is that true or not? mine currently I assume is the 8.4"

ok can't be fit into the "8.4 inch" one.

so are there any problems besides rust to look out for on this other axle?

maybe see if the actuator works, but since you have the 8.4 your going to swap it all anyway just get it in there ha ha. depending on where your at i cant really see rust being too bad for an axle that is less than ten years old, but i guess if you live up north they like the salt a little too much. if the rust is surface, great sand it off and paint it, if it the bubbly cancer rust i would pass

You can not put an 8" E locker differential into you 8.4" axle housing.
Your only option is swapping out the complete axle for the trd axle.
No tacomas ever came with rear discs. I've never hear of a Tacoma axle rusting out. Tacoma frames rusting out, that's a different story

I'll give you a hint... The rear axle is not cast, in one piece.

Das is true...

And the pics of the taco diffs I've see, they aren't rusted out... But they do like like they've been sitting at the bottom of a salt water lagoon for a while

Considering my 84 trucks frame is about to rot in two, my axles have so much as just the paint knocked off...

Japanese steel!

Scuba is right....On a side note I do believe that the Tacoma / 3rd Gen 4runner axle tubes are a little weaker then the 95 & earlier IFS, but you have to run wheel spacers.

Not sure you "have to" run spacers, but your e brake cable will be too long if you use a Mini 4wd axle.

If you want to run the same width you would have to.

I just put a 99 Taco TRD rear under my 03. It took me about two hours and was very simple and easy. I had no problems and it was a direct fit; I don't see why it would be any different for an earlier Taco. Mine was pretty rusty when I got it, I just sanded it down and painted it and it's good as new.

I agree with everything you said, never heard of discs and rust was a frame issue.
