Distributor location

I'm sure this information is out there but I have yet to find it. I just did a head gasket change on a 92 four runner and I think I have the distributor off by one tooth but I'm not sure. Does anyone know the location of the distributor after install it on top dead center? When I put it in I made it 12 o'clock on the number one cylinder. After turning it on and timing it to idle the timing is going off just before the marks on the crank pulley. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

the #1 piston at TDC, the distributor rotor button will point at the #1 spark plug wire post in the cap.

Thanks. Got it started but now it idles fine but when I drive it it has power for awhile then Boggs down. After I turn it off it smells like burning metal of of the exhaust. Thinking its a clogged cat from all the burn off from the head gasket change.
