curious question

howdy all i just picked up a 87 toyota truck 4x4 5speed the other day it starts up great and everything except for after you drive it for a while. if you turn it off and try to start it itll take a couple tries or if you give it some gas itll fire up. just wondering what causes may be if the carb just needs tuning or what this is my first toyota and it does have a 22r engine.

Pumping the accelerator pedal once or twice is normal on carbureted vehicles. Since the fuel is sucked into the combustion chamber, once the engine is stopped the fuel will mostly evaporate. It takes a couple pumps to put fuel back into the intake passages, via the accelerator pump. If its taking several/constant pumps, check your float level to ensure there is fuel in the float bowl. If not, work backwards. Float level adjustment, fuel pump, hoses, filter, etc. If there is fuel in the bowl, a new accelerator pump may be necessary, which usually comes in a carb kit.

Whew....
