Cold Air intake vs Deck plate mod
#82
There are woods close to here.. I wonder if I can find a bear and see if it stinks when I'm not there?
{yes, I'm pissy... I don't like spending 3 hours going through a hundred CDs looking for something to prove my word. A "thank you" from Whitey would help - I'll be holding my breath if anyone needs me}

Yes,you would lose a little with any intake allowing more air in;larger exhausts do the same thing. I really can't tell anything from the seat of my pants with the plate in or out but I like the sound and any free hp mod is worth it in my book if I just lose a little down low.

Now thats settled, what would cause that 50 HP spike in the dyno? Serious question.

We'd asked the dyno guy, and he wrote it off to a fluke, but again, it didn't happen to anyone else. I was the 2nd truck to go, so you'd think it would have shown up again elsewhere.
Based on how a dyno works, I don't think it was from any electrical interference - I had the EMP generator disconnected that day.

The only thing I can think of is that it may have been a large timing kick. I had the SMT5 back then (yeup, while I was NA) and I may have had crap in one of the timing cells. But still, it's a HUGE spike to have come from just a timing advance on this engine.

My guess would be that if you had stock headers, but all other mods the same... you'd not have seen the spike.

As you know, exhaust "tuning" is a big deal in some circles. At some rpm and load, you could get a sweet spot with high Q, acting like a turbo over a very short range.
Then again, I may have a bad case of rectal-cranial inversion. There are real experts on this stuff... don't know if anyone here has that background.

K&N Cold Air Intake Results
Don't want to beat this dead horse since you guys are getting tired of this long thread.
So, here are my results plain and simple:
Driving consistantly conservative without a lot of hotrodding ($3/g gas sucks).
Before: 16 - 17 mpg
After: 20-21 mpg
It's expensive.
It's pretty.
It works!

I found a cold air intake setup for $85 on Ebay, here is a picture of the completed install.

I have yet to put it on my own 4runner, just wondering what you guys think of that setup.

Actually... I know it's "somewhat common" for buggies to have the air intake on the cabin side of the firewall. The air's generally a WHOLE lot cooler there!
The downside of doing this in our rigs is that most of us don't want to hear THAT much intake noise.

An expansion on a good idea...maybe
yes... the idea has crossed my mind on if it work/how it work to hook up an a/c condensor somehow to the intake...don't know how that would work but it sounds cool. Maybe somebody's already tried that?

This should really be in the newbie section as there a million threads on this topic. You are always going to have two sides on any mod, Its up to you to figure which side youre comfortable with. If money is not an issue buy a cold air intake (which sits right where the deckplate would)....while the factory box is out, do the deckplate..then switch it up. or why dont you just make a hybrid of the two.
amen to that
