Chrome removal?

I didn't see a body section so I figures here would be a safe place to put this (MODS, if I am wrong please move this thread and I will be informed for future, thanks). I am trying to remove the chrome from the Grille on my 1994 pickup. It is starting to peel but I notice it is really thick (like super aluminum foil). How can I remove it? Ehow posted this but I think mine is too thick for this.

This dude took his to a chrome shop and they removed it for $3.

I don't think the grill is chrome. After multiple internet searches, I think it is vacuum deposited aluminum.

If it's vacuum aluminum, then NaOH should remove it.

I got plenty of it here at the plant I work at. All it is is a mild acid. Do a search on google and see what pops up.

I don't know where you're at but i found this fairly quick...

We use a 1% solution to test the metallizing of components that are in our headlamps that we build.

hmmmm, Grainger has it but they only sell to industrial clients who have service contracts with them (My job does but policy won't allow them to attain anything for me). I will keep looking, may go the pick it off method. I have 3 weeks until my paint is scheduled.
