changing shocks...in my garage

Hey guys...

I have a reeeaaallllyy newb question...

What is the easiest way to change all the shocks on my 87 runner in my garage. Jack stands, just a jack or any other suggestions.

Also...I am using my runner as a daily driver and a weekend rig.

Nothing to crazy..just fireroads and light to medium offroad.

What would be a good shock...any and all suggestions appreciated.

Thank you....

need nothing, just leave it on the ground, thats how i changed mine. you could use one if you want.

as far as shocks go, id do a search. every person has different opinions on different shocks. would you prefer a stiff or a soft shock? I have rancho 9000's on mine and i like them because they are adjustable, if you want the shock stiff, twist the knob, and vice versa. its up to you really.

next time, you might want to post it in the vehicle specific thread section, so 86-95 trucks/4runners. fyi

good luck on finding the right shock!

Although you don't need to jack it up, I did so that I could get the tire out of the way. It made a lot more room to work in.

I went with Rancho 5000s. They are decent, but definitely nothing special. I basically got them because I got a good deal on them. Lots of people on here seem to like the bilsteins and the OME shocks.

Its not very difficult, but a pair of visegrip pliers is a must fot rusty old shocks. As for brand, Old Man Emu. I bought cheaper shocks, hated them and bought OMEs within 3 mo. They're nice.

Yeah, if it's a DD, you don't need to go too crazy on shocks. I used Bilsteins, out of Performance Products. They're only about $50-60 a shock, and give a good stiff ride, which I like.

It is nice to jack up the spot you're working on & take off the tire, like toyng said. Spraying the bolts with some kind of rust penetrator a couple times a couple days ahead of time makes a huge difference, too.
