Make sure you drain the motor oil not the transmission fluid
Don't tighten the drain plug that tight, it doesnt hold the truck together, just snug it up nicely, if it leaks tighten it up.
Same goes for the oil filter..

I think maybe you should stick to jiffy lube. or find a friend that knows what to do, that way you can learn how its done. Don't feel to bad I had a guy in my basic engines class that had no idea what a piston was.

haha. yeah ive grown up in a "pay someone else to do it" household, and ive never actually made an attempt to find it. My dad has 3 vehicles and a house that he will never work on on his own. So im not an idiot, just a product of a non-diy household.

Well I gotta say this is a first. but honestly...youll never learn if you dont do it. So go for it. Get a haynes manual or similar and go slow the first time you try something new. Good on ya!

If I could cuss on this site......

Nicely said.
I remember the first time I changed the oil in my '93. I was so scared I was going to screw something up
Dont get discouraged. Take your time. and make sure you have the right size socket(s)/wrench(es). Toyotas use mostly metric size bolts so make sure you have a set of metrics.
Oh and the drain plug should be the lowest bolt on the oil pan.

thanks again. well i havent gotten under the belly yet due to torrential rain and way too many cars in our garage, i have encountered another problem. occasionally, the truck leaks oil, normally in small amounts, but it has been known to hemorrage a few times. I check it every couple days and never let it get below the bottom line. i dropped a new battery in yesterday and she ran fine. i went to start it this morning and was greeted by a huge cloud of smoke, mostly white with faint hints of blue. it will dissipate after a few seconds but im concerned that it could be serious. Thoughts?
