Can't get fuel to the carb.

Can't get fuel to the carb.
What I at first thought was a problem with my new distributor now looks like a fuel issue that developed while my truck ('84 22r) was just sitting there.
My mechanical fuel pump is only about a month old, but no fuel is coming out of the outlet when I crank the starter. The inlet line is clear at least as far back as the filter, and all of the line is new. I haven't checked the return yet.
Any advice?

Not being smart but do you have fuel in the tank??
Have the lines on top the tank rusted off?
Fuel line Crushed??
Has it ever run after sitting for a year??
Did you get the lines on the fuel pump wrong reversed??
Fuel pump drive on cam not working like it should or missing??
Bad new fuel pump?? Where is it from??

At first I thought it was inexplicably empty, but I went down to the gas station and put 5 fresh gallons in.
It was sitting for about two years before I bought it in February. But since then I've put about 3,000 miles on it.
I believe that the input and return were reversed. I checked today by blowing through the line and it looks like I had them swapped. That would totally explain why so much crud was getting into the carb before this started and why it looks like rust was on the inside of my filter.
The pump's just from an Autozone down the road.
It's been raining today but I still have to remove the valve cover and check the drive. I just did a timing chain replacement and the little ellipsoid was there when I put it all back together. When the weather's better, I'll check the return line and probably end up dropping the tank and investigating further. Is it likely that the hard lines could have a bunch of build up? What's the downside of running new fuel line straight from the pump to the tank?
