I've driven both and I have to say that the V6 is more pleasurable to drive. Also, is the 95 or 96 an SR5? Limited? Does it have a button to the left of the steering wheel that says "RR DIFF LOCK"? You also have to determine if it is a 2nd Gen (90-95) or a 3rd Gen (96-02). I don't care too much for the 3.0 V6's in 2nd Gens, and I would probably take the 4cyl-auto before the 3.0. That's just me, though.

Post some pics of the rigs. Might shed some better light.
The 4banger with the 5speed is quite nice, and does excellent offroad. If its auto I would more lean towards the v6, thats if its a 3rd gen.

As stated above i would take a 4cylinder auto 3rd gen over a v6 2nd gen.

Listen, man, before you go buy all of this stuff, make sure you like wheeling to start with. Just take the stock rig and head out to a trail (try to go with someone with experience). All those mods you mentioned cost a bit of money. I don't know how much you have to work with, but the suspension alone would be $600+ (parts only), tires would be the same @ $600, front bumper is ~$800 (part only), etc. The stock rig is pretty capable, so you can have tons of fun with it.

I have owned 2nd gen v6 auto tranny (same as the 95 you are looking at), never drove a 3rd gen with a 4cyl. But I have a 4cyl in the 2nd gen I have now. I did not like the v6 in that model. I love my 22RE!

Anyways, IMO go with the 98 hands down. Nicer car all around (better trade for the stang) and the 4 banger will still suit your needs just fine.

There are numerous lift options available for 3rd gens. Putting a lift on your truck won't make it any slower but it will decrease fuel efficiency. However, larger diameter tires will decrease your vehicles performance/acceleration. Check out the following websites for more information on what lifts are available:

www.sonoransteel.com
www.wheelersoffroad.com
www.toyteclifts.com

Search around here and find out what best suits your needs. How much lift is practical? I'd say no more than 2.5-3" in the front, otherwise the CV angles will be too severe. And for the rear, Land Cruiser coils provide the most lift settling at about 3.5-4" of lift. Again, look around and find what will best suit your driving conditions.

IMHO, I really enjoy the practicality of 16" wheels. Tires are much cheaper and I just think it looks better. Most run an 8" wide wheel. An ideal setup for me would be a nice set of 16x8", 4.5 backspacing wheels with 285/75/16 tires. It's up to you, though. Set your truck up the way that YOU like it.

my trail rig HAS NO LIFT i have 32 inch tires.. and i cna go almost anywear now that the welded rear is in!

i would if you are doing the 3rd gen put a elocker axle or retrofit the 3rd.. that would be the best mod and mud or all terrain tires... stock can do alot and lifts are expensive and not needed right away.. armor winch good tires you need that

Dude, i was asking some newb questions too , (nothing like this) and was gettin my ass reemed. Just to save you some hecklin , and to get you faster replies, type your question in the SEARCH bar. I was familiar with Yota's but the knowledge i got by using the SEARCH is priceless.

Also try the same thing at TTORA.com, you'll get good answers from both sites. Just research man. It'll give you the best answers and help you decide what is best for YOU cause it's mostly opinions your looking for. (not being a dick, just tryin to help)

P.S.--- Get the 4 banger and Stay away from the body lift. Just my 2 cents

The best way to swap it to a manual would be to trade it for a different truck, a transmission swap would be pretty involved.

I say:

2-3" Lift.. Coil spacers are fine.. new coils/shocks are definetly worth it though.
32" Goodyear MT/R's
Some Armour(skid plates, bumpers)
And if you have the money an ARB Locker or Toyota E-Locker for the rear axle.

^ That would be a sweet rig, 2.7L is definetly a good motor for 4wheeling.

Also, regarding your questions about lift kits: http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-lift-kit.htm

So in summary: Body lifts are pointless for what you're looking for, and pretty homo. If you're going to do anything, save some money and invest in a suspension lift, that way you've atleast improved the ground clearance. It sounds to me that you're just looking to have a vehicle that can get you deep into the woods for hunting & camping. In which case, take the 98, do a few cosmetic modifications to make it your own and enjoy it as it sits. It is plenty caipable to get you onto some logging roads for some deep woods camping/hunting. It will take thousands of man hours, and dollars to make it (what I would consider) a wheeler, and then you'll cross a line where it's no longer a street legal turck.
