Axle Question
So I installed my new front driveline, yeah. I put the 4runner on jack stands at all four tires. Started it up and put it in 4wheel drive to make sure the t-case was working. Driveshaft spun, centersection flange spun, front tires did not spin.
Manual locking hubs were locked. Any ideas what went wrong. How much am I looking at to fix the problem?
By the way, 1995 4runner 3.0 v6 SAS w/ 1985 front axle.

Huh? Bummer this is in the no flaming Newbie tech section, cuz I would LOVE to have some choice words about how you need a solid axle ...
Anyways, the axles don't change "positions" - the manual hub either engages the splines on the axle, thereby connecting it to the brake rotor/hub/wheel, or not.
You can isolate if it's the manual hub by taking it off and turning the AXLE by hand and seeing if the other wheel and/or driveshaft move.
Did you rebuild the hubs? If you get too much grease in there, they won't work right.

This also sounds like it could be classic broken Birf syndrome.
If it was your diff, you'd likely hear it. Only thing you might not hear is a busted pinion. That could be checked by seeing how much wiggle you have at the DS flange.
But if it isn't your hubs, yank the birfs out and check them.

takes 5 minutes to pull the locking mechanism on the hubs to figure out where the problem lies. use the fsm to assmeble the hubs back properly, then see if the problem persists.
if so its deeper in the axle, then pull the whole hub

my manual hubs were so bad when i bought my 4Runner, the cog would not rotate out to engage. after a through cleaning and greasing, i had 4 wheel drive. hopefully it is something as simple as cleaning your hubs.

TC: It is already solid axle. I am just new and dont really know where to start.
I do have to reseal the axles so I will definintley going through everything. I am going to pull the hubs tommorrow to check those out. Then the tear down begins. If it is a broken birf, I will probably get the longfield axle/birf combo and use my current ones as spares.
I have the fsm pages printed and also the rebuild thread from ih8mud.com.
Thanks for your help guys, really appreciate it.

Sounds like you've got a good handle on the repair. Start from the outside and work inward. You'll get it.

It was a perhaps too subtle jab that you need to learn quick - these things happen A LOT to SFA rigs. The maintenance on a SFA is at least 10x more frequent and more involved than IFS.
You gotta remember that you're giving up 10 - 20 yrs of design advancement and warranty/maintenance-reduction focus going from IFS back to SFA...

I pulled the cover off of the hubs yesterday. On the driverside, just from looking at it, I noticed that I was missing the bolt that goes into the birfield. On the passenger side, I am missing the big spring and the bolt, so I am guessing, based on mu luck, that I am missing more parts farther back in the hub.
Does anyone know where I can get any missing parts other than the dealership.
Also, what is the best way to get the cone washers out. I have heard a brass drift and a hammer, but is that a real hammer or a rubber mallet or what?
