another first timer
Hi everyone this is my first post and I am not all that mechanical so bear with me please.
Anyway I just purchased my dream truck and it is in awesome shape and I just love it. 93 4 cylinder 4x4 xtra-cab.
Let me tell you my overall plan:
I want to be able to drive it as soon as possible as it is my main vehicle, so for now I need it to be as reliable as possible, and as I get more into 4x4ing I plan to lift it and get big rims and tires and all that but for now I have about $2500 - 3000 to sink into the motor to try to get all the horse power and fuel economy out of it. There are a few minor fixes that needed to be done, and I had planned on rebuilding the whole motor (320,000Kilometers on it) but turns out the truck is not in need of a full rebuild...anyway now I need some advise.
The motor is fine, compression is 150, 155, 155, 150 so fairly even all around, nothing leaks anywhere, the fuel pump has recently been done, and the owner had to take it to a saftey inspection a few months ago so all the electrical and "saftey" stuff is perfect.
About all that seems wrong besides tires and a little bit of rust is the heater wire is broken (but seller gave me the cable for it) and the valve guides leak a bit. I have to change the timing chain. Both bottom ball joints need to be replaced. And new shocks would be nice. It seems to click kind of loud to me, but I have been told it is normal, it is the injectors, it is just the way the 4 cylinder sounds.
Since I have to do the timing chain done at a shop my question here is should I just do a valve job (to tell you the truth I dont really know what all that entitles?) I know I would get the cylinder head sent into a machine shop But would that fix the guides from leaking? Will it help make the compression better?
Also heard replacing the cam shaft will also help get a little more horse as well so thinking about that.
I also want to know more about cold air intake, I think I want it, but what are some drawbacks? What about Canadian winters with it?
And exaust; my pipes are stock, and look rusty but no holes and muffler sounds ok, but can replacing that with a performance muffler give me a significant increase in horse power or fuel economy?
I think thats about all I can afford at the moment, but let me know what you all think and i you have any suggestions or anything.

breathing is important. Intake and exhaust are simple bolt on power adders, not sure how much power you'll net out of them, but they can't hurt as near as I can see. You want to keep the exhaust below 2.5 inch, some guys will tellyou to run the 2.5 inch, and thats okay, but I would recomend the 2.25 inch actually. to big and you begin to actually lose power and fuel economy because you lose the effectiveness of exhaust pulses. As far as a cold air intake, you would probably be just as good with a very nice, reusable air filter. A good tune up will always help mileage and reliability. Plugs, cap rotor, wires, and check the O2 sensors, theres a mileage getter. Hotter cams of course will add power, but not always economy.
Oh, and Welcome to YT!!

Thanks!
The more I think about it, the better someones suggestion seems. Which was to get a I4 2.7 Liter 3RZ instead of doing any work on my running 22-re.
So I'm thinking I will fix up other stuff and prepare for a new motor down the road. Tires (right now front and back different size and not so hot) Shocks, and make sure the front end is going to be solid.
As for getting an exuast system now for my 22-RE; should I just wait till I get a 3RZ to do the work, or will they both be ok on the same muffler and pipe size. I also like the idea of 2.25 pipes rather than 2.5, but would a 3RZ like the 2.5 better?
And how about the transmission (or other parts?), is going from 116 to 150 horsepower going to kill it?
