alternator on the way out?

I noticed a really loud ticking in my tach the other day. So loud the only way to drown it out is to have the stereo cranked up. At the same time my Battery guage is almost pegged on the high side. I checked connections at the battery and the alternator itself. I am thinking maybe the alternator is taking a dive and putting out too much juice. Any help would be great

92 4runner, 3vze, Red Top optima battery, no mods or stereo equip.

I'd put a volt meter across the battery terminals to see what voltage you're getting. anything over about 14.5 and I'd say the internal voltage regulator on the alt is not working.

Thanks.. I finally got a multi-meter and checked it...it reads just under 14. I don't think this is the total cause of it, but your right the regulator is on the way out.
