98 4runner cupholder

hey guys this is my first post so be nice
i have been doing some researching and have come to find only the 99 cupholder mod for the 98 cupholder
i was thinking...would it be possible to put one under an aftermarket head stereo unit? like a slideout one in that extra space
what do you guys think?

i have seen those, but why would you want to do that? i mean, the top of your drink is going to obstruct your stereo and you will most likely adjust/change stations more on a stereo moreso than your climate control. depending on the distance from the cupholder to the shifter, you might even crush your drink/cupholder when you put it in park.

plus, its still going to bounce and jiggle your drink.

i mean, sure, give it a try and let us know, but just imagining it, i think its not such a wise idea.

sik laxer,

so you want to block your access to your stereo AND your climate control too? dude, not to bust your chops, but think, man, think!

and if you carefully read the cupholder mod writeup, if you find all the parts including the tub and the brake, you dont need anything special besides common hand tools, a coping saw, a dremel, and a rachet extension. nothing too difficult about this.

i have just resigned myself to make my own center console. i hate the one thats in my 98, and im not really even that fond of the one in the 99. im just curious if the taco and the 4runner are similar enough to swap a taco parking break in there.

as for this thread, i use the two on the back of the center console. when i offroad, i have a camel bak tied to the back of my seat, prevents those nasty water bottles from rolling under you pedals or flying across the car and hitting your friend in the passenger seat.

only a few things ive questioned toyota on. one is the cup holders, that were the same in the 2nd gen, (cant say for sure on the first), and that slightly goofy banana shifter. it would be fine if it was higher up, but its not! lol.

I just recently did the center console cup mod to my 97 4Runner. I found a roll over at the junk yard, took the entire center console out with all the mounting brackets and e-brake. Didn't have to do any cutting, just filed down the nub that holds the e-brake cable in the track at the base of the e-brake. Relocated the ECT switch and rear window switch to the dash. Took about 1 1/2 maybe 2 hours total. Majority of which was relocating the switches, I had another mod for a cell phone booster installed earlier. I took the console out about 2 weeks later a painted to match my interior, the one from the junk yard was gray and I had an oak interior. Junk yard total for all parts was $20.00. Paint was more, but well worth the investment. I followed the mod post, but without the cutting or drilling. Works and looks like factory.

The cup holders in the dash are plain dangerous (I think) they offer almost no support for any of your drinks and I've had coffee spill on me many times while driving to school....what i have done is i just put my drink in the rear cup holders behind the center console. They seem to work a tad bit better and its not that much more of a reach. just my two cents.

As for the 99 cup holder mod, I backed out of it as well because it seemed like a lot of work and something that I could easily screw up with no MAJOR reason to doing it...but its your call. Thats why everyone has different mods - different needs and wants.
