My 97 4-Runner (Auto) will not shift from Park to drive. The button to release the shifter will not engage, it seems locked. I can however shift gears if is press the little button in front of the shifter counsel. Any ideas on why this would happen or how I can fix it?

 

Most likely it is the brake switch that lets the tranny know when the brakes are engaged.
