Exclamation 91 4runner problem

i just bought a 91 4runner 2.2re that wasnt running at the time.
i figured it was the fuel pump but after changing that its the same issue, the truck will start and idle for like 10 seconds but when gas is applied it dies, there is no fuel leaks, fuel pump works and i changed fuel filter. The fuel pump goes up to 10.5 volts when the truck is idles but its idleing at like 500rpm..

the truck would run while spraying gas into the intake, which i did in order to drive it onto the trailer but then it backfired and now it will not try to turn over, im assuming that i blew a relay.

any suggestions or input is greatly appriciated. its my first yota!

Well..if your fuel pump has 10.5 volts at idle, what's your battery putting out with no loads, key off? If its under 12, charge it and try again. At idle you should have at least 12.5 to 13 volts in the whole system. Even at that point, it still isn't enough power to really work right. Probably a battery/charging system issue...

Just so you know, your truck has a 22RE, not a 2.2re.
Your truck does not have a mass air flow sensor, it has an AFM. They are two totally different parts.

Otherwise welcome to the board, and good luck with your truck.

so ill try and find an alternator for it, i had it boosted off my chev for most tries. the fuel pump gets 0 volts untill i turn over the motor and then it gradually gets up to 10-11v before the truck dies. isnt the fuel pump supposed to have power when on acc?

The fuel pump wont get any power until the engine starts cranking, the door inside the AFM has to open to send power to the fuel pump.

You shouldn`t have blown anything by spraying gas into the intake. Try checking the ignition fuse and EFI fuse in the fuse box in the cab. check the fuses with a meter, because sometimes they can look good but be bad.

Spraying gas into the intake may have caused a flooded condition, wetting your spark plugs, and slowing ignition. Pull em, gap em, and let it sit overnight, see if it helps. Might chase the wires back to the pump, ensure they aren't grounded or corroded anywhere.
When you say backfired, did it come out the intake, or the exhaust? An afterfire is raw fuel being ignited in the exhaust, a backfire is raw fuel burning off in the intake. Backfiring could be caused by bad valve timing, leaving one open on a compression/ignition cycle.

narrowed it to the igniton fuse which keeps blowing, even when useing a 25a. so there is obviously a short somewere but it goes right into a harness.

So ive decided to rewire the ignition to a push button start since i cant figure out were the short is, and was thinking about wireing the fuel pump to a switch since the existing wires are corroded i believe. Does anybody see a poblem in doing this? If so please speak up and let me know!

For the ignition first of all. The push buttom gets a direct 12v from the battery , a ground, and a connection to the starter. Correct me if im wrong but it sounds simple enough.

Don't know about the pushbutton start, never set one up. One more set of wires to get messed up. Just follow the fuel pump wires from tank forward, replace it all if needed, and wrap in some loom cover.

Before you start hacking things are you sure you don't want to figure your ignition out?? I have seen what a push button start can turn into and it isn't pretty.

Well most people are stareing me away from the pushbutton, so i guess i have to figure out the ignition. The starter gets 12v but the small wire wich i assume is the signal doesnt send any power.
