G'day, just bought 4 CV boots because they're definately stuffed. When I do replace them, and have a look at the axles themselves, should I find that they're stuffed... I may be a bit stuck. See all the parts shops that I've been to only have the '89 4runner as the first model with IFS... My question here is... Are '89 4Runner CV joints going to be the same as on an '85 4Runner?

Other question is, according to the mechanic at the CV specialists, I couldn't drive without the cv axles in place... Anyone driven around without they're CVs without causing any damage?

yea as long as your hub are unlocked ive driven home from the trail with a broken or no cv..
also a 85 is a solid front axle so its not the same as a ifs cv
