89 22RE 4WD Issue

Hi all...I recently purchased a 89 pickup 22 RE 4X4. I have searched these forums a lot since I've bought it and they have solved a lot of my issues. So thank you! However, I still have an issue I cannot find an answer for. I was in my driveway just shifting the transfer case in and out of 4HI to make sure it shifted properly. I might have done it twice and then the shifter locked into 4HI. (4WD indicator light on) The truck does not have ADD. I tried the reverse, forward, etc. and it still wouldn't move. I had the hubs unlocked and drove it a mile down the road to my mechanic who was replacing the brakes for an inspection. I told him the issue and when he put it in the air the front axles were not spinning. He took the boot off and said it was torn but wasn't sure what the issue was. He recommended a transmission shop. Before I take it there, anyone have any suggestions? I'm usually fairly good at diagnosing issues but this truck is my first 4x4 so I have no experience with transfer cases. Any help is much appreciated!

When you mechanic checked it did he lock the front hubs before telling you the front wheels were not turning. If he did lock the front hubs, MAYBE the switch that indicates 4WD is stuck? Be the first place I would check.

Alot of times going many years without service those 4WD shifters get stuck. Take the shifter out and inspect if all seems to look ok then lube it with some all-purpose grease and put it back to gether and see if you can get the shifter move. Theres also a bushing down there as well and can be OEM replaced.
