hey anybody notice that the passenger side (left one in the photo) U-bolt is not flipped like the other side? I don't know if that's bad or not, but it sure doesn't look right.

 

Lol xtreme, you saw the front crossmember right?
The bumpkin who swapped the axles didnt do it the right way.. (drill a 1/2" piece of plate with a hole offset 3/8ths of an inch inwards from the existing hole)
So i wouldnt be surprised to see some booty fab
But it does work.

 

Hopefully it works and lasts a while. This thing is pretty custom fabbed. But it works, the guy I bought it from took it bogging and rock crawling and it still runs great. Doing a complete tune up on the 22R first before trailing it. I'm pretty sure the guy mentioned he replaced the timing chain guides with steel ones. Something about preventing the old ones from wearing out and slipping. Any other special things about the 22r I should know about?

Would it be hard to do your method for the front crossmember or should I just leave it since it works?

Also should I flip the U bolt on the axle?

 

can't just flip the stock one, it comes as a pair when your get the kit...

 

apparently the P.O. didn't get the "kit" haha. So the one in question is actually the stock one? it looks as though there are two spring mounts on that side of the housing to me.

 

I like having two ties downs/chains on each end of the truck/tractor...been hauling crap for 25 years...if it wears through a single strap...well you know what can happen
this is what I use, the ends of mine has since been modified to use chain from the ratchet to the trailer:

similar to what you can find on trail-gear or other sites.
I also carry a set of chains with binders...

to the best of my knowledge all Toy Mini SA truck axles look like they have a double mount on the short axle side, dunno why

i have some straps that i got from a trucker from my pipeline job, 60,000lb'ers lol

 

The previous owner said the whole drivetrain was from an 83 "vintage" which I am guessing was a 4runner/pickup. Are 81/82 axles the same as 83?

I am definitely investing in 2 straps in front and back now. My to-do list is LONG.

Thanks for all the info ocdropzone. So since you say all mini toyo axles have double mounts on the short side, is there any problem having my U bolt the way it is? Or should I flip it? It does look odd, but if there are no driving issues with it, waste of effort I'd say. I can't see why there would be an issue with it upside down.

 

i cant think of any reason your ubolt would be a problem. when you buy a ubolt flip kit from trail gear or marlin crawler etc it comes as a pair to do one axle. the ubolt on the passenger side of that axle, with the threads on the bottom is factory, the other is aftermarket. nice samuri. my buddy has on eand its a beast offroad. his has Jeep YJ springs all the way around with boomerang shackles and it works great and he runs 37s. good luck with the sammi id lov eto have one.

 

Well, to get the front crossmember back into normality would be a task in itself.
Id just inspect it and try to make sure its good to go.
Also inspect the rear spring hanger, I'm curious how the PO did it. Unless its like a custom frame all the way back.
And yeah, those ubolts should be fine.

Also, toyota put the spring plate on the bottom for a variety of reasons. One being you use it to make sure your ubolts don't slide down the side of the housing. And two, because you can mount up a sweet diff gaurd on it, like what I have out in my shop.

 

81-83 are the same axle.
I don't think there is a problem having one side with a u-bolt flip, just kind of funky looking

oh and 4Runners didn't come out till 84.

there is a guy in my area with a Sami on Toy axles and some 33" boggers, the thing looks like a beast

to do lists: I have had my current project for almost 4 years...I think the list just gets switched around

well at least his sami/toy hybrid has the correct number (8) of u-bolts, your truck if I remember correctly only has 4

 

Mind explaining where I can find the rear spring hanger?

Looks like I'll be leaving that U-bolt the way it is. My "to-do list" is just full maintenance on the samurai right now. As much as I can do without considering it a rebuild.

That looks like it'd work for the front. Is it 3/8ths plate? If it is, id weld it all the way on for extra security lol

I can't tell enough about the rear to make a call, because I've never noticed how they swap toyotoa axles into sammies.
Looks like he just built a new rear crossmember, then outboarded the springs.
Id be a bit lear if he did, because it might not be very strong.

 

I just went out and measured, its 1/4" plate on front rear spring hanger. I don't even think it was welded on either, just those 3 bolts holding it. Should I pick up some 3/8ths steel plate? Maybe even 1/2 inch?

Interesting rig. Where are you from? It would appear the po was a bit of an amateur when it comes to building and swapping. The rear spring hanger for the front axle looks pretty precarious the way it's bolted together. And no, changing the thickness of the steel isn't the issue. It's the way they are bolted onto the existing shackle hangers instead of being welded directly to the frame.

To answer the earlier question about having what appears to be a second spring perch on the right side, isn't that for the stock swaybar end link to mount to?

Having the u-bolts flipped on one side but not both shouldn't change the way the truck functions. It should only mean that the unflipped side has that much more "anchor" affect when wheeling... If you notice, it appears to possibly be the stock u-bolt plate installed on top of the springs with round u-bolts under the axle instead of square u-bolts over the springs and the plate being under the axle...

Just my two cents and a little constructive criticism.
