85+ 22r in 82 pickup

Hi, new guy here. Ive been a mechanic most of my life, but am fairly new to Toyotas. I recently bought an 82 4x4 pickup and I love it. the engine has over 300k miles, and although it runs fantastic, it is worn out and lacking a little power. For peace of mind id love to throw in a fresh engine, my only question is, can I use any year 22r to replace my engine and still use my factory intake/exhaust to pass ca smog? I plan to put a header on eventually, but for now if I can just use an engine from an 85 and newer and just bolt up all my factory parts id be more than happy. thanks for any help

it's a 22r already, right? the 20r went out of production after 1980?

yes, 22r. I'm just wondering if all my intake, exhaust, and other bolt on parts will fit the 85-up 22r's because I know there were port changes

that is interesting, it does look like they changed the exhaust port on the later 22r motors??

Generally speaking, most parts for a 1984 and earlier 22R are different and will not work on the later 1985 and later 22R. I am not sure about the manifolds but the heads and ports are different between the early 22R and the later 22R. Hopefully someone who knows for sure will chime in.

I had another idea,
You can call 22RE Performance who specialize in 22R and 22RE engines. They should be able to tell you for sure.
