84 Pickup, Shorter Wheelbase.

Got the '84 Pickup Ext Cab.

Going to remove bed and add flatbed type stuff.

Was thinking about moving the rear axle forward. Wanted about 6" clearnace on the back of the cab with 35 inch tires.

Chop off extra frame and add new cross members.

End result would be a short, nibble rig for trail and rock, minus a couple feet of ass end.

Good idea?

Possible problems?

Experiences?

Thanks.

You might be moving the axle into where the frame is sloping up giving you clearance issues with up travel and of course you will be into your fuel tank also.

What is your wheelbase at now? A lot of guys opt for the extended cabs/longbeds for the longer wheelbase in my area. On steep climbs, such as in rockcrawling, a short wheelbase can be downright scary due to the front end getting light. I've seen several jeeps and Samurai's end up on their lids because they just didn't have the wheelbase needed for a climb. A longer wheelbase will put more weight/traction on the front end, adding stability and tractive effort, but the downside is break-over angle. I can see the advantages of a short wheelbase on tight trails and wooded areas though. Just depends on what kind of wheeling you are building your truck for.

I live in north Idaho so almost all our trails are logging roads. Pretty tight picking tho the woods. Like playing in the rocks but they are super common up here. I stay out of the mud completely.

Good things to think about tho..

Thanks.

Bump.

so i am still thinking about doing this.

Was thinking that if i could find a shorter driveline that comes stock in a similar vehical ( i.e. 4runner ), then i could move the rear axle to work with that driveline.

That way i am not getting custom drivelines all the time.

Where is a good place to find lenghts for drive lines of stock toyota rigs.
