'84 front clip onto an '83?

Friend is looking at grabbing a '83 4x4 pickup, but the front clip has been removed. He's got a line on a local '84 front clip for a reasonable price

Is this a bolt on affair? I did some Google searching and FAQ on YT, but no definitive answer.

Thanks,

Purely for availability. I think someone scooped the 1'st gen front clip because it's better it's got that rough look to it. I just found out he actually already bought the '83, but wants to know what's needed for the clip.

well, what's needed for the front clip is the front clip from a 1st gen 4wd pickup from 79-83.
any of those years should exchange, but it's not a bolt on affair, and it requires some welding.

79-83 are first gen huh? Why would it not be bolt on, if it's removed from same?

When you say front clip do you mean just the fenders and hood, or was the entire front of the cab cut off? If he only needs the the body panels then it will be bolt on but if the front of the cab was cut off you will need to weld a new front clip on.

When I hear "front clip removed", this is what comes to mind.

Front clip refers to the ENTIRE front clip. As in, the picture above.

Also, 84+ fenders won't bolt onto a 79-83.

The 84 had the 2nd gen 4WD body style, the boxy style.
The 79-83 is the classic more rounded style.

And, it wouldn't bolt on because the front clip that holds on the body-pannels is actually spot welded on.
You'll have to plug-weld a new front clip from a 1st gen on.
Unless it still has the clip and is just missing hood and fenders.

Resurrecting this old thread with a question.

What if it is reversed. Will the hood, fenders, grill, and lights bolt up to a 2nd gen? I was having this discussion with my buddy about his 85 4runner and he was saying the only thing cooler would be if he could put a 1st gen front on it.
