84 4runner wheels don't fit

Hi, I am new to 4wheeling and have purchased a 84 toyota 4runner as my first project. It is solid axle with the manual locking hubs. My friend had a set of tires on t-100 rims. They fit perfectly on his 89 4runner so we tried to put them on mine. The rears fit no problems but the front we had to shove on and when we did it wound up hitting some of the suspension and the wheel would not turn. Why is this and how can I solve it? Do I have to worry about this when buying other rims as well?

sounds like you have a problem with the backspacing on the wheel, sounds like the wheel sits in too much and you need some wheel spacers or some new wheels that have the right backspacing.

How to Measure Wheel BackSpace
Items required to measure wheel backspace: Tape measure
Straight edge
Wheel w/o tire (preferred)

The easiest way to measure backspace is to lay the wheel face down onto the ground so the backside of the wheel is facing up. Take a straight edge and lay it diagonally across the inboard flange of the wheel. Take a tape measure and measure the distance from where the straight edge contacts the inboard flange to the hub mounting pad of the wheel. This measurement is backspace. I think mine are about 3.5" backspacing.

ya i tried puttin some wheels from my ifs 89 on to a 81 straight axle and the rims hit the tie rod. its definatly a backspacing problem. you either need new wheels or whee l spacers.
