hello ok i have a question and i know it might seem stupid ,but i recently got a 79 toyota 2 wheel drive,R20 motor. the question is is this truck a 4 speed or supposed to be a 5 speed? the shifter ball says 5 speed but when i cleaned up the carb. and took it down the road i could only get it into 4th geer.

 

I know that back then they did have 4-speeds as an option, and its possible that someone but a 5-speed ball on there.

 

Yeah, somebody probably just put a 5 speed shifter knob on it. I think you can see what tranny it came with by looking at the metal tag in the door frame, or in the engine compartment. Can't quite remember, though..

 

thanks guys soo much at least it gives me another place to look and try and find out . i thought the same thing also that someone just maybe put on the 5 speed knob.but i wanted to ask people that might know . thanks again

 

Did they even make 5spds in 79?

 

Don't think so but after all those years you never know if someone's swapped it out for a 5 speed.
