4.56 3rd

NOOB QUESTION
so im going to swap out my 4.56 rear. the diff is making some nasty noises, growling and whirling at acceleration and deceleration. Now im going to look at another one tomorrow from a guy on a local forum, is there any way to tell the condition of it and the bearings by just looking at the 3rd. The obvious would be spin it and check the gears but as for bearing and such im not sure

He said gears look good and backlash is good and that it wasn't noisy... people can say what ever they want tho..... and how do I know its really a 4.56 other than a paint code? Any help would be awesome

also a diff code G254 works out to be a 4.56 right, on my door vin card

Thanks everyone!!!

You can count the number of teeth on the ring gear and divide by the number of teeth on the pinion gear to be sure. I bought 4.56 thirds from here and I forget off the top of my head the number of teeth on the ring.

As for condition, look at the ring and pinion to see there's no chunks missing, any indication of them overheating, etc...spin the gears...

I'm sure more guys will chime in that are more knowledgeable than myself.

All I can tell you for sure is - as I'm in the market for two factory thirds with 4:56s right now.. I'll be interested to see more replies on condition assessment as well!!

Thanks, 89. I believe all the rings have 41 teeth and the pinion is what changes to determine the ratio. I had the count written down somewhere but couldn't find it. Now that I think about it, the 4.10's had 10 teeth on pinion.

I can't help you with the 4.56's now (maybe in the future when I go with 33's and the 4.88's out the axles I got sitting)...but I will have the 4.10's I no longer need up for sale at one point.
