Ok I have a lot of expirence with pre 86 rigs and Tacos 95-04 But just aquired a 93 Std cab 5 speed with 4.10's 22re......

I will be going directly to 31" tires but not really sure if 4.30's are worth the effort.....In my guess it will bring back to a stockish ratio...Would 4.56's be a wiser choice.... How rpm happy would it be with 4.56 on a 31" tire? But in the end I will probably go with 33x12.5 and if so How do they fare with 4.56's.

This is will be a hunting fishing work commuter. The hunting part is important. I will be going ball joint spacer front and 2" add a leaf in the rear as I already have the springs. New shocks probably OME. A selectable locker for the rear would be down the road also. New brake lines are already needed so I need to run those plus a new radiator.

I have not searched brake options yet and know I should but I figured I would ask this also since I'm already here. I know Taco upgrades and they are pretty slick if you go with Tundra set up....is there anything like this with the 86-95 trucks.

 

if you run 31s the stock gearing will be fine. If you want to run 33s i suggest 488s

 

4.30 will work fine for 31's - but I love my current setup with 4.56 and 31's.

I'm going to put 33's on soon enough and will have to stick with 4.56 for the time being. Gotta save up enough dough to have ZUK regear my axles for me.

 

i got 4.56 with 31's on the newer 2.7 and its excellent. If your going to go bigger than 31's i would go 4.88's

 

The V6's that came with 31's had 4.56 stock ... no way I would go with higher gearing than that with a 22RE

 

I have had many rigs with the 4.10s and 22r+22re coupled with 31's..just looking to not have the gutless factor, plus i figured if I decided to skip the 31's and went to 33's it would remain the close to stock. Which I think is fine for my needs. Well with the addition of a locker.

My Taco will be bought back by Toyota and I will miss the locker most of all.

Well at this point everything is moot. I have had a hard time finding a good list of what gearing was offered when and where. I don't mind searching through the bone yards as I like to anyway but a comprehensive list of codes versus years and such would be key.

And did I read correctly in the 4.88's that came stock to Toyota have a slightly different set up so going after market would be the way to go?

The rear diff in the factory 4.88's has an offset pinion, and can not be regeared. If you think you will ever go to bigger tires, your best bet is to regear your existing diff.

 

I doubt very very much even if I went to a SAS I would ever go beyond 35's as 33's in the past have served me well....add a locker and I am good. But I dont wheel to wheel anymore. I wheel to get to camp or go to remote fishing holes. So this rig needs to be DD friendly.

 

So with 4.88's whats the deal with lockers...anything to be mindful of....I just got a lead on front and rears unkown brand.

Funny I had it my mind what I wanted to do, I really need to stay away from the SAS threads here and at pirate. I don't need it but dang if the simple+strength factor alone wasn't enough
