2wd Rear locker possible?

Your diff is the same as the rear on 4x4 models w/o the elocker. It's referred to as the V6/Turbo 8" diff. ALL '96-02 4runners without the elocker came w/ this diff from the factory (2wd or 4wd).
That means you have your pick of all the same lockers as the 4x4s...ARB, Detroit, Lockright, to name a few. Or you could do an elocker retrofit (there are several write-ups on this on the web).

I see them on ebay pretty often. Since you don't have a front diff, you could go w/ your pick of gear ratios. Elockers come in 4.11, 4.30, and 4.56. I would go w/ 4.56 especially if you're running 32" tires or bigger. You'll regain some of the lost power from bigger tires w/ a lower gear ratio. If you have stock size tires and don't plan on going bigger, 4.11 or 4.30s will do fine.
There is a fair bit of modifying that you need to do to retrofit the elocker into your existing diff. Most people do the swap themselves, but if you don't have a welder/grinder you may have to find a shop that would be willing to do it. Or, you could just swap the entire axle w/ one from a junkyard 4runner w/ an elocker already in it which is more $$ upfront, but you'll save on the labor.
Elockers usually go for about $300-500 used and I've seen full elocker equipped axles go for around $700-900 plus shipping. It just comes down to if you want to save time or $$. Here's a link to a good write-up so you can see what the job consists of...
