I've heard if you put a locker (toyota e-locker would be my choice) in the rear, it will perform as good as a 4x4 open/open.

A locker, which makes both wheels connected at one differential pull instead of one pull & one slip, will be about the only thing you can do to assist the traction of a two wheel drive in any appreciable amount. You can convert a two wheel drive to four wheel drive but it would be cost prohibitive; in other words cheaper to sell your two wheel drive & put that money toward a truck that is already a four wheel drive.

A locker will make you go 90% of the places that a locked, lifted, armored 4x4 will go.

I doubt that^.

But that being said, a locked 2wd will go pretty much as far as a open/open 4x4. It really depends on the terrain and driver skill.

if you really like your truck you can collect parts and convert it into 4x4.

Yeah, unfortunately my 4runner is 2wd. I am a dummy for keeping it, but I love it and take exceptionally good care of it. When it stops being my DD, I will put a 4x4 3.0 tranny on there with tcase and then swap for a 3.4. The reason I do not use the 3.4 tranny is because the 3.0 4x4 tranny just fits better, and it will make thinks more simple when I finally SAS it.

Yeah, so much to do, but future future future.. Blah blah blah. I am still working out the kinks...

I just saw this and thought that the OP was kidding. It was the word "kit" that caught my attention.

I like the comment:

"holly s#!!# this thing works so freeaking good. My jeep's 4 wheel drive broke and instead of going and buying the expensive parts to get it fixed i just bought this cheap part and now i can do anything off road that my friends can off road. Thanks kaleco for fixing my jeep for less"

Only a heep.

Yeah lock the rear and in most terrain save snow it will take you almost everywhere that an open/open 4x4 will go, and a few more places. I take my truck up extremely soft long cinder climbs at high speed in 2wd with the rear locked. Most of the time i cant do those same climbs if i'm in 4x4 open, the front tires slipping actually ruins it for the rear tires.

Toyota electric lockers absolutely ROCK, if you can get your hands on one the only modification needed to be made to the housing is to cut out a small portion for the actuator motor, and to drill 2 additional holes and switch the gaskets.

people have misconceptions on how difficult the wiring is, simply because toyota uses a rediculous computer for it, just like everything else. You can wire it up using nothing but relays for almost no money at all. Here is a great writeup on how to do that.

Scroll down to "control circuit" for a nice wiring diagram.

Mild lift (if any), 265/70 Mud tires (285/75 if running a lift), and a locker.

Bout the best your gonna do.

Don't do a 4WD conversion. If you want a 4x4, sell yours and buy one.

Lock it. You can go farther than an open/open 4x4 in some places. On your setup both rear wheels are getting power. On an open/open, the wheel w/ less traction up front and the wheel w/ less traction in the rear are getting power. So at least you got power to a wheel that has more traction.

A locked 2wd will not go as far as an open 4wd. I've tried it. Open 4wd still has low range. 2wd does not.

A locker will help you out a bunch. It would be a great mod for your truck. But don't think you'll be able to suddenly wheel the difficult trails with it, or you'll get in over your head, and run into trouble.

Not even close. I hope that was a joke.

Please refrain from making left or right turns once this kit is installed... LMFAO! and man4god, that comments not true, and ive proved it. wehn i went offroading back in november with JoesToy, his 2wd tacoma with an elocker made it a lot farther than i thought it would, but still got stopped, since its not 4x4.

Depends on what you want to do. If you drive it around town mostly, then I would definately go with the lift. If you want to hit trails immediately and do that kind of stuff, then a locker would be your choice.

With a Taco, go with the lift. Lockers can get expensive. (Don't get me wrong, so can a lift, but lockers are like 300 without any installation and actuators and such..

Since you just got your truck looks like, make sure to put good oil, filters, and take good care of it. Think about synthetic fluids and other mods.

Depends where you wheel. If traction is a problem=locker. If clearance is a problem=lift (and tires) A lift alone will not raise the axle.
