I am looking at buying a 2nd Generation Toyota pickup and I want to beef it up to take it off road. I have been reading through YotaTech and trying to figure out with engine would be the best for me. 22RE or 3vze. I will be mostly driving the truck on the road but will also be taking it on light off road trails every once in a while. i have heard great things about the 22RE, the legend of Toyota motors, but it doesnt seem to have as much horsepower as i want. the 3vze has more ponies but has many problems.

Please elaborate on the pros and cons of both...along with possible horsepower mods...

22re they are reliable and in a truck thats not as heavy as a gen2 runner it wouldnt be as slow... but they work great!!

This is true... but such a topic really has been discussed at great length. Your best course of action is going to be to search and read, read, read... read.

You'll find that most like the reliability of the 22RE and will bash the 3.0.

HP mods are endless, but the 3.0 generally doesn't show a change.

Of course, the 3.0 equipped trucks can be easily swapped to a 3.4... which is truly an excellent Toyota powerplant in many ways.

 

NO 3.0 the 4cly or new 3.4 but never never never go for the 3.0 youll be disappointed if you do

You can do anything. Turbo, supercharger, nos, crank, cam, pistons, bore, head, exhaust, intake...anything you want to do to an engine you can do to this one

I don't care what everyone says about the 3.0 I have one with 205K, and it runs great. It does alright on gas, and as decent power, for what it is.....afterall, if you want to go fast, you should buy a sports car, not an SUV.

Some folks who bash the 3.0 have never experienced it, or if they have, they were too hard on it.

As for your question on what would give you more HP from the 22RE:
The addition of 2 more cylenders and reconfiguring the block to have the 6 cylenders configured in a "V", and make sure the displacement adds up to 3.0 liters.

Drive the two engines and see what you like. The 2.4 will not make the torque of the 3.0 or power, at least not without hardcore (read expensive might as well swap 3.0 to 3.4) engine building. It will then have severely decreased reliability. The 3.0 makes more torque at idle than the 2.4 does peak to put things into perspective.

The 3.0's are slow, 3 liters is too small for a 4,000 lb 4runner. The 2.4's are even slower to point of ridiculous if you live in certain areas of the country. If you climb a lot of hills/mountains, definitely get the 3.0. If you live in a flat place with a slower speed limit, either will do.

Again, I am one of those that has ran 300,000k on a 3.0 in a built wheeling 4runner pulling tires, sliders, all the things that make a truck heavier and less aerodynamic. Find that longevity in a 2.4.

Another thing, when you get info about the 3.0, make sure it is from someone who has owned it for a significant amount of time. There are a lot of 3.0 theorists out there.

what are the main upgrades that i can do to the 22re to give it the power of the v6??
i live in washington with lots of hills everywhere. i am getting a pickup so i am not too worried about the weight that the engine can handle.

i really dislike my 3.0. that's all i have to say about that.

 

I know many people who get that engine life out of their 4bangers...the 22RE is a great engine even if it is small. I run mine with 34" Swampers on stock gearing, on hills, through mud and rocks, ect...and sure, u gotta give it some gas but its never let me down...stay up on the mantinence and it will run forever...

just my .02 though...

 

so this is what i want to do with the truck i get:
1. 4-5 inch suspension lift, long travel rear springs
2. 33 inch tires
3. tubed front and rear bumpers

I want an extended cab pickup. I will be using it as a daily driver but also take it off road every once in a while.

with all of this weight in mind, what would be the best engine choice for me?

 

A 3.0 truck with a transplanted 3.4.

That failing, the 3.0 will do pretty well pulling that truck around. Had one. It was pretty good, but the HG failed (which I caught early). The HG failed on my 3.0 4Runner too. I also had a HG fail on a 22RE. The difference is, the 3.0s had regular maintenance, never overheated, fresh coolant, and failed anyway. The PO of my 22RE neglected the coolant badly and instead of fixing the radiator, he put in stop-leak. Evil stuff. The motor was full of it, and some passages were plugged. Motors don't like that.

Had two 3.0s, won't have another.

I have a Pickup and a 4Runner with the 3.0. The engine is very smooth, and in my experience, reliable. Definitely go with a Manual tranny though. The A/T really really dogs...especially if you add weight. I imagine it would be better near sea level, but at 7000 ft, it's pretty slow. As far as mileage, on the pickup with 4" lift and 32x11.50s i get about 15mpg city and up to 20-22mpg Hwy. The 4runner, stock with the A/T gets 13 and 18 respectively, unless it's cold out- then i get 11mpg.

I think the best advice is to drive them both and get the one you like. With the right gearing, and maintenance, you should be fine with either. IMO
