22RE Lurches & Bucks Like a Stallion

I have a 22re in my 1986 4Runner. The motor was rebuilt 2-7-2011 and has 7836.2 miles on it. The rest of the car and nearly everything else is factory original with 299,683.7 miles on it. Well, except I have a clean air filter, new plugs & fuel filter during rebuild, spark plug wires, cap and rotor replaced in 2002. The moving gate or separator inside the air flow meter works well with no impediment. Here is my problem:

When I'm on the highway and let off the gas it lurches and bucks like a bronco. The same when I'm in any gear in town, particularly 3rd gear at 2500 rpms, even 3K rpm, bucks like a bronco when I let off the gas. I have NO miss, NO idling problems, NO acceleration or under load problems, NO rough idle or backfires. The ONLY problem is the lurching/bucking during deceleration.

Now in any of those deceleration examples, IF I push in the clutch simultaneously with letting off the gas there is NO bucking problem. I drive this vehicle 1 to 2 times a week, but not many miles. What the heck is going on - HELP!!!!

PS - I did have a check engine light, but unfortunately I disconnect the battery when no it use so no doubt lost the code. Bummer

22re lurches and bucks like a stallion

Just a guess. When my 1988 Toyolet with the 1.6 Toyota 4A-LC engine does this it is usually a faulty exhaust gasket seal at the manifold to exhaust pipe, right where the oxygen sensor is located. Both engines use the same sensor by the way. I theorize oxygen is sucked in on deaccelaration and it confuses the sensor which sends a signal to the computer to cut back on gas and causes a bucking action. Even it it's a little lose it can happen. My engine is an electronically controlled carb

This sounds very similar to what I am experiencing and I have an exhaust leak between my exhaust pipe and the output of the headers.

What is that gasket called? I tried gwtting one at advance auto and they just brought out a bunch that didnt fit....

Exhaust flange gasket. I don't use Advance, too many bad experiences. Here's the Auto Zone page:

I suggest the Fel Pro: Part #60572

Went to Advance Site, Gasket Page:

Fel Pro Gasket #23591

I find many similarities in the Toyota 4 cyl. engines of the same vintage especially with the engine controls. Glad I could help.

Thanks - Love my 4Runner as a trusted friend for 20 years and 201,728 miles. This is the only complaint I've had. Thanks for the input. It's appreciate!
