I just got a 1989 toyota 4x4 it smokes after sitting overnight. My question is do i need to replace valve guides or just valve seals?
Other than that it runs perfect no skip and has plenty of power.
Thanks for any help.

It depends on how much oil it is using. I had an 86 that would use a qt about every 175 miles . I put new valve seals on it and it went up to 300 miles before adding a qt. To say the least it needed valve guides. So figure the oil usage and go from there.

Just like you all are mentioning oil leaking past valves is very common oil consumer issue. And since you said it does it only sitting over night i'm guessing its "gray-blue" smoke? Then thats prob what it is. If you remove the head to do head work its best to check the valves and their clearances. Check valve guides and the valve stems them selves. Replace valve stem seals of course. Is the oil consumption bad? How much do you have to ad frequently? If its bad then replace those seals and check and or repair valve gudies and stems.
