Smile 1991 3VZE head gasket job #2

Hi all. I'm a Toyota fanatic who recently purchased a 91 truck running slightly rough. Did a compression test and 3 and 6 had 30 psi of pressure, all other cylinders showed 150-160. Sad day.

Called Toyota and the original was replaced on recall in 2001. Truck only has 143k miles. Lets hope having the heads machined and torqued with new bolts helps it last longer this time.

I've done 4 engine rebuilds/head gaskets before on the 7M in mkiii Supras, but this is my first v6 engine tear down. I'll just be doing the head gaskets and leaving the bottom end alone. I've heard Ted with ENGNBLDR is great so will likely order parts from him for the gasket kit (except the HGs which will be genuine Toyota) and bolts.

I'm also planning on replacing the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, a pulley or two, having the heads machined flat and checked out and that's about all I have planned so far.

Any recommendations? I have the top end half apart. I just took out the fuel rails and need to tackle the intake manifold next. I'm hoping to have it all said and done by next week, but most my projects seem to go over schedule so we'll see.

PICS TO COME SOON!

I posted this in my other distributor thread, but I think it's more relevant here so I'm posting here and asking that comments from the other thread be posted here.

Well I found the later generation 3vze's are completely missing the shaft that is causing me so much heartache. Though I wouldn't recommend doing this to anyone else, I cut the shaft so it fit it.

That was enough to get it running. Now it still runs rough. I replaced plug wires, plugs, dizzy cap and rotor and it still runs like crap. Occasionally when I let off the gas it dies. Extremely frustrating. I've raised the idle to about 1000 rpms and it still dies occasionally.

Compression is good and there are no engine codes. The engine sounds loud towards the front. It sound like a go kart, almost. I'm wondering if there is an intake leak below the plenum/manifold somehow, but that seems incredibly unlikely. I used all new Toyota gaskets and had very clean surfaces.

Not sure how well sound will transfer with the video, but here it is:
