1990 Yota 22re slow start and high idle
Hey Guys,
My 1990 Toyota 4x4 takes a long time to start and seems to idle pretty high but only when it's cold. Once t's warmed up it idles fine and fires up first thing. Its a 22re truck with 138k on it. Any ideas on this? It almost acts like it has a bad vacuum leak but I can't hear one.. the fan makes a lot of noise though. Any tips would help!

I would think an IAC valve but I'm not sure if a 22re has one or not. Buy a can of starter fluid for the vacuum leaks, with it running warmed up spray all along the intake and vacuum lines slowly and if there is one the engine rpm will rise.
For your fan, I'm guessing your clutch fan on the engine, most are loud when the engine is first started because all the fluid is in one side of the clutch and the noise should go away within a few min. It should also spin freely by hand with the engine off cold, and spin more freely if the engine has been ran only a few min.

Thank you, I will check on that today. I was actually going to check the vacuum like you were saying this evening but wanted to see if anybody on here knew of some kind of switch or something that might be bad. The fan is new, I just mentioned that because its hard to hear a vacuum line over is all.
Thanks

UPDATE: I replaced about half of the vacuum lines the other day and the slow start issue is fixed but it does still idle really high for awhile when cold, Im going to replace the rest of the lines when I get the time

Yeah it only does it when its cold, if you sit there long enough it will eventually idle down to normal. It idles high enough that I can take off without giving it any throttle myself

Are you talking about the screw on the top of the motor? If so then it is so loose it is barely finger tight. The little black canister and stud sticking out of it by the throttle is shown in the pic attached

Im not what that is but thats not the idle air control screw ita on the passenger side of the intake manifold (upper plenum) near the front where the intake tube clamps in it come from the side just past those 4 vaccuum line wish i had a pic...

Oh ok, well I will go check that out... Im totally new to the yota world and every other vehicle Ive had is either a new one with warranty or an older carb'd v8 so I don't really know what Im messing with

What do you define as high idle...? Most engine setups are designed to have a high idle speed upon cold starts to aid in quicker warm-up of the engine and the catalyst for emissions purposes... once normal operating temperature is reached... idle speed is lowered.

X2 on this. OP does your truck have a tach? How high is it actually running? My 3.4 idles high till the temp gets up and finally drops to normal rpm once water temp hits 175 degrees.

I don't have a tach but I would say 2,000 rpms or so, I can take off and even spin the tires in gravel if I let out on the clutch fast enough. Back when I was having radiator issues I noticed that it would idle this high until the thermostat would open (180 stat) and then it would idle down, I had the cap off the rad to make sure the stat was opening and that's how I could tell it idled down when it got to operating temp. If this is normal then that's fine with me I guess, I just wanted to fix it if something was wrong

2,000 RPMs is too high of a cold idle speed. A good cold idle speed for a 22re should be about 1100-1500 RPMs. Normal operating temperature(hot idle speed) should be 750-900 RPMs assuming all engine parameters are met(Internal health, Timing, Ect.).
Possible Idle speed incorrect and or out of adjustment...
Possible Ignition timing incorrect and or out of adjustment...
Possible Incorrect Coolant Level...
Cooling System "flow" problem...
Incorrect thermostat equipt...
Dirty throttle body and or passages....
Blockage in throttle body cooling passages...
Ect...

Is there a way to adjust the cold idle speed? Once it is warm it seems to idle just fine and no other issues with it, has good power for what it is. That's why I'm so insistent on it being something to do with just the cold run circuit/mode on the truck.
