What's the word on the 1GR vs the 5VZ?

I've read a go-zillion things about how wonderful the 5VZ 6-cyl engine is, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one that had 100k on it if it met my other condition criteria.

I don't know a single thing about the 1GR, however, and there really isn't a whole lot of scuttlebutt around here on it, either... Am I to assume that no news is good news? Is it safe to assume that Toyota did their normal job of quality engineering, and a properly maintained 1GR 4.0 6cyl should be as good as a similar 3.4 5VZ?

We're looking at a 2003 4runner with almost 100k on it, and I'd love to keep the family just toyota, but I also want to make sure I'm not getting the latest 3VZ, you know?

So, any input on this motor?

From what I have heard, the first year for the new V6 was a bit problematic for Toyota. I believe the second year was alot better. Try doing a search here or over at T4R.org

Yeah, I searched here... Only came up with like 18 pertinent threads with 1GR as a search term. I'm hoping that means no news is good news.

You suppose if an engine is up to 100k the bugs have been worked out?

What kind of new-engine problems were they encountering in 2003?
