Gas Mileage - V8
Have the '03 V8 and love it, but the gas mileage is pretty bad. Onboard computer reads an average of about 16.5, but it is consistently off by about 2mpg. Depends on city vs. hwy but we're getting around 14-15. Took it to the dealer and they say the computer is accurate...but the math doesn't work when filling the tank, and I'll trust my calculator over a car computer any day!

I rented an '05 runner wiht a V8 for a few days and I though that the milage was great. But how you drive it is a very big factor in the milage. When driven conservitavley I got up to 26 on the freeway but mostly 22. And 19-20 around town. But if you drive it with a lead foot then the gas milage will come down to 16 or less, and its hard not to do because the power is wonderful.

I drive conservatively and have tracked the gas consumption since the day I picked up my '04 T4R SE V-8, AWD with 10,083 miles on the odo. Now after 21K miles of driving with the stock Dunlops aired to 34lbs cold and an K&N FIPK intake as my only mod:
4,000 mile roadtrip, 90% interstate at 70 to max 75mph = 18.5 mpg by my calcs. The dash computer is off by an ave of 2 miles per hour higher. Note: I quickly learned MPG goes down rapidly over 75mph due to wind resistance.
Mixed interstate/city/suburban driving w/AC on (this is Tampa) I average 16.0 MPG, driving conservatively. The above data was with 89 octane gas. Now I'm using 87 octane, slightly less performance, no noticeable change in mileage and I'm saving a few bucks w/each fill-up.
Did the K&N FIPK intake make a difference? Can't say for sure because I put the intake on 2 weeks after I bought it. I'm guessing it's helps by a few 10ths of a mpg and it definately sounds good, I'd do it again.
Does the oiled air filter work well? Again, this is all pavement mileage but when I serviced the filter after 21k miles and examined the intake there was not even the slightest amt of dust or film in the intake tube.

the torque in the V8 is nice though.
if you're planning on building up with aftermarket tires, bumper, skids, suspension, etc, then the extra torque could come in quite handy.
I think the difference in mileage is about 2mpg, between the 2 motors.

i came across a high mileage 03 4runner V8. i am not sure how many miles yet, as i have not found out. so far how is the reliability of this engine? any high mileage v8-ers yet?
my parents have a GX470 and i hope the gas mileage is better than theirs for this 4runner v8.
