Question TRD/engine options on 2012 Tacoma

I'm looking at getting a 2012 4WD Tacoma.
What I'd like to get is the TRD package (not Sport, can't stand the hood scoop). I also want an access cab and standard transmission. I'm not sure on what engine package to get, 4 cyl/5 speed or 6 cyl/6 speed. I want good fuel mileage and will not be towing anything. I like the bigger (TRD?) rims BFGoodrich tires that I saw on one Tacoma. I would also like navigation but did not see it available on Toyota's "build your Tacoma".

Navigation is only available on double cabs, which I think is pretty stupid. The TRD rims you saw were probably on a T/X Pro, and they're the same size as the ones that come stock on the TRD Offroad; 16 inches. I recently purchased an Access Cab TRD Offroad Tacoma with the six-speed and the V6, and it took me a couple of months to find since it's kind of an odd combo. Apparently everyone wants Double Cabs and no one can drive manual anymore!

another option, wheels and tires are easily swapped, and you can install an aftermarket nav system if you so desire...

I know taring into a new vehicle scares the bejesus out of some people, but it never stopped me. I bought my last truck brand new and had the exhaust hacked off before I even put 2000 miles on the truck

when I put my 20" Tundra wheels on my 06, I turned around and sold my factory 16" wheels and the tires on them for more than what I paid for the 20"s but in all fairness, I got the wheels from work so I got a CRAZY good deal on them

aftermarket nav units are a dime a dozen as well. you can go low dollar with an eBay unit for under $200 along with a $30 install and wiring kit, or if you want all the bells and whistles and good product support and reliability, you can go name brand with a good Kenwood or Pioneer unit

personally, I prefer my Pioneer unit over ANY stock nav unit I've EVER seen. nav, dvd player, reverse camera, hands free bluetooth connection; it does everything I need it to and more!

The only problems I can see with an aftermarket head unit are the loss of the functionality of the steering wheel stereo controls, and losing the ability to make bluetooth phone calls. There may be a way to keep full functionality that I don't know of though

ah. yeah my 06 didn't come with the steering wheel controls but you can get adapter/converter boxes for most aftermarket units to make the buttons function with the new unit

and with the bluetooth built into the aftermarket unit, making and receiver phone calls is as easy as a few taps on the screen

i drive the six with the six-speed behind it in an access cab 4x4. i test drove a 4cyl/5sp and it got around just fine. i think the trd package is bs. too much money for too little. rear locker=cool, bilstiens=cool but. . . . .

anyways, both motors seem incredibly neat. the six is very torquey and feels as if it has a "power flat" instead of a "power curve" i mean it seems to pull just as hard from idle as it does from 3500-4000rpm. it is amazing. difficult to lug this motor. doesnt care what gear your in, mash pedal, move forward. thank variable valve timing i guess

however, it is a bit more high maintenance. shortor oil-change intervals, and actually holds LESS oil than the 4 cyl. shorter spark-plug change interval also. i changed my plugs the other day. took a couple HOURS! the six of course has more mechanical parts to possibly fail too. 3 chains! 4 cams! 24 valves! im paranoid can you tell

lastly fuel mileage. i drive 50/50 highway/town. more highway if you want to get exact and maintain a steady 17mpg. no more than 73mph on the highway and i always shift <2500rpm. stock size tires. makes me cry. my dad has a 4cyl/5spd single cab and averages low 20's

hope this helps

The reason that the 1GR-FE has more frequent oil and spark plug change intervals than the 2TR-FE is because the 1GR-FE uses conventional oil and standard spark plugs to the 2TR-FE's requirement for synthetic oil and iridium tipped spark plugs. You can use iridium tipped plugs and synthetic oil in the 1GR-FE no problem though, and that would definitely extend the maintenance intervals. Mileage of the 6 does kinda suck though, at least for me. My average for all city driving is 12.84 MPG, but on the highway going around 80 MPH it gets around 18-19 MPG

I don't think I posted this but I bought a 2012 Tacoma regular cab, base model 4X4.
It has a 2TR-FE 4 cylinder engine and a 4-speed auto transmission.
The only options it came with was a sliding rear window, DRL's, carpet floor mats and door sill protectors.
I'm the second owner. The PO changed the oil every 5,000. I have the service history from when the truck was new until 90,000.
Bought it with 124,000 miles. Very minor dings here and there and the interior smells like a car that was just detailed and wet dog.
I've already done small mods to it and have all the parts to do a 3" lift, just need the time.
I have a vague idea of what the final product will be but I'll need time and money.
