tire choices for 04 4runner

Hi guys, its been a while since i have been back on this board, typical toyota quality- has my GF and Istill very happy with her 04 v8 4runner.

the truck now has liek 46,000 miles on her, and while we were not ffans of the dunlop AT20s that came on it at thge time, tire choices were slim, but since the tires were new, we figured we would address this when they need to be replaced.

i dont like the traction in snow that the dunslops have, and since this is my GF's 3rd 4 ruuner (95, 98 and now the 04) she is used to aftermarket "beefy tires" that she has put on after her originals wore out.

i see the 265/65 r17 is an odd size tire. even the tire rack only has like 18 choices of tires.

i read a lot of good reviews on the bridgestone dueler Revo, but man are those pricey tires. tire rack has them for ~$160 a corner. they also have the Pirelli Scorpion At for like 140 a corner, and those get great reviews , even better than the revos, for less money.

what are your opinions of each tire?
also, acording to what i was told on this site, the biggest the new runenrs can put on for tires without a lift is 265/70 R17. in this size the revos are 140 a corner.

is there any side effect, even minute ones about running the 265/70 instead of the 265/65?

i know the speedo will read a little off, (low) but other than that, any issues?

also, bridgestone has a deal that they have a rebate of $75 when you buy 4 tires. so, that coupled with the less expensive 709 series would actually make the revos less money than the pirellis.

the truck is mainly driven on road, but as you may know, winter in Wisconsin can get hairy, and we also go up to my cottage and snowmobile, where it gets even snowier.

the stock tires manage, but only due to the excellent traction control, electronic stabilty and such, and smart allwheel drive the runner has.

your takes on this guys?

Tom

well i read more on this subject on this forum.

looks like we will get the revos is 265/70 r17, and have them mounted in a month when the snow may begin to fly. the dunslops will be fine until them.
i forgot to mention about a month and a half ago, on the way back from work, my GF hit a chunk of metal some tard dropped off the back of his truck (assumedly- i wasnt there when the incident happened) and it punctured the inside of the sidewall on her rear drivers side tire. she was able to pull off intoa parking lot, and i was able to rescue her in like 5 minutes. thank god yota put a full size, 17" same aluminum and same tire as the 4 normal tires.

there like a 2" x3" v shaped gash in the side of that one dunlop. crappy, since i knew it was irrepairable...

bad luck, but beside the tire damage, nothing else , not even a scratch happened. i kept telling her she did well, since she was safe...

it was just bad timing

do not buy the prelli scorpion, poorly built tires, wont balance for anything. and they suck in snow, they were the first tires i put on my last truck, and they wear out wicked quick, about 20k miles

I put Revo's on my 05, they are awesome tires. There is VERY little road noise even at 80mph. The off road ability is great, I have to climb our Mountain on a dirt road every day, they are great.
The finally price tag will kill you, but atleast for me the Revo's were the best choice. Only thing I don't know about is tire wear, I've only had mine for a month.
OH FYI if you get the 265/70 instead of the 265/65, your speedo will be off slightly.

I have a 3rd gen, but with 17" Tundra rims. I will be getting REVO's in 265/70's this Saturday. I was told that they wouldn't rub, but we'll see. I've also heard nothing but good things about these tires, and since I go up skiing a lot, plus go to visit my parents in Wyoming, A/T tires would come in very handy. From what people say on here and at tirerack.com, these tires are awesome in the snow and off-road.

horkn - did you get your tires yet?

Did you put the 265/70's on yet? I am considering exactly the same thing, planning to order tomorrow if they are okay.

Did they rub or cause any problems? They are 1" larger diameter than the 265/65 R17 's.

Thanks.

Does anyone know how large a tire you can put on a 03' Tundra. I have 265/65R17's on it now and was wondering how much larger I can go before they star rubbing.

Are you on stock suspension? If so, 265/70/17's will be the biggest you can go before you start rubbing. With my old set up, I did not rub, except at full lock and compression.

Kumho Ecsta STX 285/60R17

I've had these on our 2003 4Runner for 45,000 miles and they have been great. A little heavy on the steering but the grip has been incredible. I've surprised more than a few M3's, G35's and RX-8's through the twisties. Of course the 7 years of track experience in the Boxster is more important than the tires, but the grip is far better than the OE tires. And they have a nice agressive, but not silly, look.

the Toyo Open Country ATs are pretty sweet and priced well. Great all-around handling tire, on and off the road.

I second that, I would have bought them again but my local dealer does not sell them. Just keep them rotated and regularly balanced.

I went with the Cooper ATR 265/70/17. slightly larger diameter, but less than the 265/65/17 that came stock. also compensated for the speedo being off.

?? 265/70/17's are larger than stock, not less.

I've heard good things about those ATR's. Hope it works out for you.

I've got a 2003 V8 4WD 4Runner. The OEM tires were the Dunlops. Braking and turning performance of the Dunlops in the snow was quite poor. I've since replaced them with Michelin CrossTerrains. I haven't noticed a huge difference between the Dunlops and CrossTerrains on the road. The CrossTerrains are NOT an aggressive offroad tire. They are quiet and comfortable on the highway.

But I don't run the CrossTerrains in the winter. I bought a set of 16" Nokian Hakkepelitta snow tires that I run in the winter. Great performance in the snow. The Nokian's are quite loud and cost me about 1-2 mpg.

From what I've read, you can also expect a 1-2 mpg hit from the Revos.

I have Nitto Terra Grapplers and they are great. I have also had BFG AT KO's on previous vehicles and they handle well also.

I just got the Michelin LTX AT/2 P265/65 R17 on my '04 4Runner. Haven't had a chance to see what they can do yet, but they are fine on pavement, only slightly noisier than the OEM Dunlops, and they handle a little more crisply...

Bridgestone A/T REVO's on my 2003 - WOW.

Just put Bridgestone A/T REVO's on my 2003... went with 265/70-17... best fit without rubbing... tires came first before lift. 100 miles in, they ride true, straight and quiet on concrete pavement and bite very well on dirt ranch roads. HUGE improvement over the goodyear FORTERA mall-crawlers that the previous owner had on.... can't wait to get out on trail to see what they do in 4low. before and after PICS:

April 2008 follow up - hit the trail in west Texas: rocks, mud, sand -- Wichita and Brazos river beds.... REVO's did GREAT! really HUGE improvement from the FORTERA street treads. Good bite, little spin, cleared mud very well. Crept over rocks when aired down and did not suffer a puncture despite being in mesquite and cactus thorn country. All that and a very good on-pavement ride to and from the trail. SWEET!
