Yep the LamdCruiser 120 (Prado), 4th Gen 4RUnner and Lexus GX all use the same platform. The 120 is somewhere between the 4Runner and Lexus. It has more the lexus styling, but not all the luxuries.

Actually the current 4Runner is based from the Prado platform and have very little to do with the 3rd Gen. But then again to have Landcruiser heritage is not a bad thing at all, actually the reason why I got mine.

THe prado is good. THe GX!! To much luxury for me. I was deciding between the two. Due to the price and forethought of lifting and big tires, I went with 4runner instead. I am glad I did. (Even though I think the lift kits for the 4runner will work with the GX. THat will be interesting to see.)

FYI,

I measured the stock 17" Ltd wheels. The specs are:
17x7.5
offset: +30mm
backspacing: 5-1/4"

other than the goodyear mtrs and the revos .... what do you guys think about other tire brands? i'm still stuck deciding between the 275s and the 285s, and then i have no idea what type of tire ... i will be offroading a lot, but also it is my daily driver, so i need for them to be good in rain and ... oh this is my 1,002nd post! anyway ... i'll just be keeping the stock 17" limited rims for now, and just trading out the tires.

but i just don't know what to do for tires. right now i'm running michelin xcountrys on my 265/65/17s ... they are awesome tires, but since i did my 3" lift, and will now be offroading more, i would like to upgrade to something a little more geared toward offroading, while still being awesome onroad.

mostly i'm concerned with rubbing, loss of speed/mpgs, and capability in rain and mud. i drive it daily on the road ... highways and city streets ... but then on weekends i'll be taking it offroad.

i have searched on these issues time and again, but have never known what to do/get, and i thought maybe now that its more specific, i might be able to get some good recommendations.

heard anything about the procomp xterrain directional?

285 or 275?

sigh.

And all this time, I thought it was just me that was being undecided. For me, I know I want 285s for sure. I would prefer 305 or 33x12.5, but I think that will cause way more rubbing.

Anyways, I am still tossing the ideas of getting ATs (BFG AT or Revo AT) or MTs (MT/R or BFG MT).

The price differences is very minimal between the four tires. On the other hand, the price diff between 16 and 17 is about $30 - $50.

I've ran BFGoodrich AT before, and was very happy, but I've always liked the look of MTs. I think that pretty much says it, MT/R!

What I am undecided about is whether to go with 16s or stay with stock 17s. I'm gonna test the MTR 285/70R17 tomorrow at Discount Tire. I'll let you know what I decide.

As for the XTerrain, I like them too, but they don't have a lot of sizes.

No way, timber, I'm undecided too.

I'm leaning toward 285s in an AT tire (because MTs don't do as well in the rain ... and we have a lot of that here). MT/Rs are sooooo good looking, I know, they look about 400x sweeter than the ATs, but alas, for my purposes I am apt to go for ATs.

Do let me know what you think tomorrow after you test out the tires. I don't really have a choice as for wheel size since I have the larger brakes ... but that's okay. I, too, am pretty much decided on 285s, though I don't like the thought of having to tear up the fenders to fit them.

When I had them on my Expedition, I did not notice any lose in tractiion in the rain (or snow). Then again, we don't get a lot of either around here in socal.

I just got the 285/75R16 Revo priced today at firestone today. $725 OTD.

Had BFG AT's on the Bronco I sold before buying my 4 Runner and they were okay in the rain when new. After about 10K I could really start to notice their wet performance drop off. At that point I had to be very careful coming away from a stop if I didn't want to spin the tires. They were even worse in panic stops. Can't recommend them in the rain.

I guess that's how I wrecked the Expedition. Does it suck on dry pavement too

I went to discount tires to test fit the LT285/70R17 GoodYear MT/Rs with my stock limited 17" rims. I have to sadly report that the MT/R rubs the upper control arm when turned to full right even on level ground.

Based on others experience, I think this problem can be solved with:
1) 10mm (1/2inch) wheel spacers (cheap)
2) InlandTrucks balljoint upper control arm (expensive)
3) new wheels with a smaller backspacing ( 5" or less).

Good news is that besides rubbing on the control arm, the tires does not rub or make contact with the mud flap or cone on flat ground. This means, I don't have to trim as much.

So, my thoughts are to go with aftermarket rims with a 4.5" - 5.0" backspacing. I think 4.75" to 5.0" backspacing is best, because it will let the tires clear the control arm, but won't take it out too far so I don't have to trim as much.

This is with MT/Rs. I think you can easily clear with ATs in the same size. I might be able to put 275/70R17 MT/Rs and not rub the control arm.

Anyways, I'm going to go with Setup B from my first post. Now to wait for them wheels to come in.

When you go to discount tires, how do you go about test-fitting these tires? Can I just drive over there some day and they'll help me out, or do I have to find someone willing to bend the rules in order to test fit these things?

I'm not buying a new control arm, that's for damn sure!

Yes. They are willing to test fit for a sale. I have assured them that I will buy from them. It's just a matter of what setup. They even had to freight the 17s over from several distributors. They even remounted and (hopefully) rebalanced my stock tires after finding out that the MTRs rubbed.

that's really nice of them!!! even after I told 4Wheel Parts that I'd buy from them if they had enough tires in my size, they wouldn't let me test fit them!

I'll definitely go to DiscountTire when I know that I have the $$ for tires. I'd really like 275s, but everything is so confusing.
