Oil filter question

I know that the following has been a big debate in the past, however I have researched several sites on this matter and I would like some input from you guys. I have a 2006 Tacoma 4.0 V-6 4x4 auto tranny and the original factory oil filter on this truck is a 90915-20004 and the new oil filter number is 90915-YZZD1. There has been much discussion on these type of filters. One comment was the 20004 is a Japanese filter and the YZZD1 is a USA filter. The cut away views show a huge difference in the filtration system. The 20004's are no longer available at the stealership because they have bought into the YZZD1's. One site said stay away from the YZZD1 b/c the thin paper filter inside does not filter as good as the 20004. One site said the 20004's are hard to find and that this filter (due to the thickness of the filter) is only used by the factory to rid the thin metal particles in the engine and that you should not use this filter after the first oil change. I have heard great things about the Mobile-1 filter (M1-102). One guy said his oil is noticeably cleaner when he uses the Mobile-1 oil filter. I just bought a Mobile-1 filter today but before I change my oil next week I wanted to get some feedback from the Yota Tech members. Thank you all in advance.

I've heard good things about the M1 filter, as well. If you're worried about the OEM filter, the M1 is a good option.

For me, though, I've always just used OEM filters without a problem. I'll continue to use it, unless I hear any negative experiences. So far, I don't know of anyone that has had engine failures or problems with using OEM filters.

I ran into the same delimma and also ended up doing a butt load of reading on this forum :pat: and others but by far, the best info I've ran across is off this site: http://theoildrop.server101.com/forums/ubbthreads.php Mobil 1's are darn good oil filters and OEM (Japan) are hard to beat but i ended up going with NAPA Gold (WIX made) PN 91516 (a good 30% more filtration capacity than OEM and it fits like a glove) But will say, changing filters is a royal pain in the butt! Already ordered a oil filter relocation kit (several good threads here) ex. Bob 98SR5 https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/writeup-how-install-aftermarket-oil-filter-relocator-kit-47266/ good write-up and looks like he used aeroquip hose - good stuff.

Good Luck!

He has an 06 Tacoma V6, where it comes stock with the "relocation" option. It's right in front of your face when you lift the hood. Difficulty level equivalent to screwing in a light bulb.

Didn't realize that, never having opened the hood of a Tacoma; must be nice not having to remove a skid plate :bigclap: to get to the filter!
