New spark plugs/front brakes

I took my '04 Runner SR5 in today for an oil change and tire rotation (30,000 miles) and Toyota says I need new front brakes (they are supposedly 90% worn away). Is the timing of this usual around 30,000 miles and is there a way for me to inspect this myself?

It was also mentioned that I need new spark plugs and a change in the coolant. They quoted me a price of $430 for this. Does this sound accurate?

Forgive my ignorance, I'm new to all this. Any help is appreciated.

Hi Well:

Look in your Scheduled Maintenance Guide, your 30,000 mile Service looks like a major service, or try the following link:

http://www.edmunds.com/maintenance/maintenance.do

Edmunds estimates the total 30K mile Service at $335.88.

If the $430 includes spark plugs, coolant change, and front brakes, it sounds like a reasonable amount for a dealer to do the work.

Look in your Owner's Manual, Specifications Section, Brakes and it will probably show a brake pad wear limit of 1.0 mm.

If you were to take off your wheels, you could probably look between the brake caliper and the disk to verify the remaining thickness of your brake pads.
