this is weird toyota says to use 91 octane for v6 and v8 runners and 87 octane for 07's. any reason why?

I think it's Toyota just messing with everyone's heads. Seriously though there isn't any change and the 87 is the minimum and 91+ is just recommended for opitmal performance.

It's just marketing B.S. Toyota must have finally realized with the rise in gas prices that a lot of people don't want a vehicle that they need to put high octane gas in.
I have an '05 V8 and it runs great with regular.

Run what makes your vehucle run the best. if its supercharged or turbo'd though ide always run higher octane but other than that its what makes your vehicle run best
