Clanking, sheetmetal banging sound

Does anyone have a clanking, thin metal banging sound while driving over sunken manhole covers/sharp dips in the road from underneath? I do, and it's making me not happy, because this a new truck. It sounds as though the suspension parts are hitting the chassis or the exhaust is banging against something.

Sorry man. I wish this site was more helpful. It has to be one of the more selfish sites I have ever been on. People will read your post but dont care to comment. I bet if you posted something about hottest girls or cheapest mod you would get plenty of replies. I just got my 4runner a month ago so i dont know what to tell you about the noise.

does it happen when you have the wheel turned all the way to either the right or left? and does it sound like it is coming from the front?

No. I know about that. A glob of grease on the steering stops fixes that. It's coming from underneath. It's the cover just ahead of the crossmember, I think. I suppose I could just yank it but I feel I shouldn't have to -- the thing is only six months old. The first "service" is coming up so I'll bellyache about to the dealer then.

That's okay. It's not a life-threatening thing. Yeah, some of the older truck forums are okay but I feel as though I have to be nice to everyone on here nomatter how stupid the posts or replies. Most car people usually come to internet forums AFTER they've covered the basics and exhausted all immediate resources. Like, if you're trying to pinpoint a mysterious engine noise and someone replies, "Did you check your oil?" and then someone adds to that, "Yeah, I agree, did you check your oil?"

I have had the odd sound coming from underneath. I had a clunk from the front end while braking or going over speed bumps - dealer installed a break shim kit and that solved the problem. On occasion I get clunk, probably the drivshaft clunk people report, when starting up or stopping - it is not that often though. Lately however, I hear a faint sound from underneath that sounds more like what you hear. It is not the distinct audable "clunck", but rather a barely audible less metalic clunck. Maybe a hose or cable or something like that hitting the undercarriage? I can't figure it out. Since it is so faint and I can't consitantly hear it either I am not worriying about it.

There isn't much activity in this forum. People here are more into the older Toyotas. try T4R.org. A lot more 4th gen enthusiasts over there.
