An air ratchet would be sufficient for this job, but an impact wrench would probably be more useful down the line. I would also locate a long prybar.
Replacing the strut assembly is much easier if you can use force in prying the lower control arm downwards. If not, you may think it'll never go back in there.

You may want to get a pickle fork or a tie rod end puller as well in order to separate the tie rod end.

so far my list of tools is this:

spring compressor (external sort from Craftsman)
3/8" impact wrench
ball joint separator
metric tools
stupid stock jack (which will be used to press the control arm down)
lots of diet coke
camera
dictaphone
maglite
music
dad's dirtbike helmet (for when handling the whole spring compressor thing)

I'm still having trouble figuring out why you are needing to separate the tie rod. Also if for some reason you need to you DON't want to use a pickle fork unless you want to have to replace the boot as it will most likely be destroyed using the pickle fork.

Lance ... you guys should see mine ... I'm one of those people who really likes to wash my truck (it's calming except that it cuts my hands up when i'm scrubbing the wheel wells!) so I think there will be a funny difference between Doug's look and mine.

But, there is something admirable to be said about that caked proof of good use!

The stealership sells a good brush just for poking into the holes in the wheel.. I got one for the wife and it works good for me. that way I don't have to stick my hands in there. I think I paid about 5 bucks for it.
