Hey, thanks for getting back to us here. Too bad the trip didn't work out for ya this weekend. Hopefully the boot will show up asap! That downey photo shoot sounds awesome...poster boy...lol. From the CV Pics I showed you a week ago, do you think I could go up one more inch in the front with out any damage or excessive wear and tear???? Thanks for all the help, and good luck.

Billy

In that case I'll do it tomorrow as my truck is at my friends driveway

I'll be going over tomorrow morning to drop off my truck to have the cv replaced so when I do, I'll take a quick pic of it (unfortunately i gotta use my phone cam but i'm sure that'll be okay for now until i get it back)

The only real way to tell is if the actual axles start to bind themselves. They would seriously sound like something is grinding. When you hear that, then you know you're way beyond the limits of the axle itself. Usually the axles work within a 15 degree angle (something like that). Outside of that, it puts alot of stress on the parts inside to make the wheel turn. Eventually parts start to breakdown and crap happens.

On the previous gen 4runner, they pretty much figured out that about 1 fin can touch and there should be no problems. For ours since it's all new, it's kinda in the dark. Hopefully I'll be able to fart around with the height using the coilover to see what the limitation is I'm thinking we can go much higher compared to the 3rd gen because of the original (stock) angle of the axle for the front.

Keep ya posted!

Thanks for the help on the lift questions...I am no where near a 15 degree angle yet...so, another inch should be fine. I'm with Momo on the phone cam...we'll take whatever we can get!

I'll keep ya guys updated.

Okay Guys...

Bare with me but this is from my camera phone, so the quality won't be that great. In the meantime hope this helps!

Can you tell what's missing on the 2nd picture?

Swaybar.... Had to go temp. Figure I'd see how it performs without it and then determine if I should reinstall it again.

I"ll try to get a picture of the skidplate when I have a chance

Give me a few weeks as I hope to have a custom steel front bumper on by the second week of Feb!

At that point, it'll give the 4runner a better look I think

I'm gonna try to open some weekends up in March so I can come down and visit ya guys in SD and do a couple of runs!!! I've been itching real bad for a run... hehehe

Lance,

Is there a specific reason the sway bar is missing from the factory mount? Have you experienced any noise from the upper control arm contacting the coil spring?

Lance-

First of all, your ride looks killer...very very impressed...I was expecting the rear end to sit low, but it looks great! I would love to see your skid plate shots...sliders getting welded on tomorrow am...I'll post some pics...I am ready to beat the hell of my rig on the trails, and the skid plate should be the final piece of body armor. How thick is the plate downey fabbed for ya?? and how far back does it go? also, did you have to remove any of the stock skids??? My buddy says he will custom fab one up for me for about $200...but I would love to see yours first.

I gave downey a ring earlier this week and they told me that the rear coils that I want wont be available for about a month...I saw in another post that you said they are up and running for the rest of us?? Is there a certain person I need to talk to regarding the coils?? I told them that I had been waiting for you rig to come out of the shop, and they definitely knew who you were, but didn't offer me any other info...?

Also, I want to gain about another 3/4" on the front. The revtek kit on my rig is about 2" of total spacer height, giving me just over 3" at the wheel/tire...putting me at the 37.5" to the bottom of the fender, where I would guess you are about 38". The angle of my CV is 5 degrees at the most, so I was thinking of adding a 3/8" spacer to gain the extra 3/4" at the wheel. Let me know what you think.

Your ride is looking so so sweet...it's nice to finally have some lifted brotherhood...how is Doug's going???

Thanks for all the help and info, keep up the good work!

Billy

Oh yeah, the guy at the welding shop told me that welding the sliders directly to the frame was going to create weak spots that may lead to future probs??? Correct me if I am wrong, but a bolt on nerf bar is esentially locked into the frame just as much, and there is no problems with those...regardless, they will be welded on in the am and the skid is the final piece...if there is a way that you could either connect me to a particular person at downey or even get me the rear coils, I would shoot you a money order + a little tip asap. Thanks again.

willymoe:

I took off the swaybar intentionally because I wanted to make some custom swaybar disconnects for the 4th gen. Since it's off, it's easier to come up with a working design. Driving w/o the swaybar isn't that bad as long as you don't make any sudden turns (duh). Offroad capabilities increase dramatically w/o th swaybar so that is part of the reason. As soon as I make or figure out a working disconnect, I will reinstall the swaybar to test it out.

Billy:

They are taking orders on the coilover and/or the rear suspension right now. I"m not sure if they are accepting any $$ but I know they are atleast taking orders. You'll have to talk to them and see what the deal is. I know they don't have any sets ready for sale as they're still making some final revisions on their setup. So, I'm expecting that they'll have the revised system ready by March. I will see them on Sunday so I will talk to them on the status of when it will ship.

I will also get some measurements for ya with the height of the truck after the tire install (forgot to do that completely). The rear is definitely not as high as I expected so I'm gonna have to either add some spacers or something. The 285's might rub at full compression in the rear so I'm gonna have to figure something out quick. I'm probably first gonna do the panhard bar drop to help the rear. After that I'll think about adding some spacers. I'd like to make sure I have atleast 40" like you Plus I'm thinking about a rear bumper too so I"ll need that extra height w/ the addition of the rear weight of the steel bumper...

I'll take some pictures of the skid plate for ya tomorrow morning (not sure what the thickness is but I'm sure it's the same thickness as their other skids... whatever that is - check their site i suppose). The skid is a 1 piece design that goes from the front to the back of the 2nd stock skid part. basically they took off the 2 part skids and made one long skid instead. The skid looks pretty strong and I'm sure it'll last along time for me. I'm sure Downey will be selling those as well as they told me they were looking into that as they saw my swiss cheese...

EDIT:
I had my sliders welded to the side of the ladder. From what i've learned, it doesn't really weaken squat Regardless I feel secure about my welded sliders so it's all good w/ me!!

Here are some pictures of the skid plate as I promised. Once again, it's off my phone cam so don't bite my head off if it's not a great shot

Front shot:

Rear shot:

Angle shot:

If you look closely it just replaces the entire 2 piece stock skid plate. Thickness I think is 1/4" but I"m not too sure. I think I remember the guys telling me it was 1/4" and I'll confirm over the weekend

Lance-

Thanks for the detailed reply. Much appreciated. I think 40" is a pretty solid # for the rear, and I'm gonna add to the front to reach 38.25-38.5". Couple of questions for ya:

What is the rear diff. breather mod?

What is the panhard bar drop?

Thanks...my lack of intelligence strikes again...

That skid looks great! I would love to get my hands on one...all that is needed to take my ride into the jungle now. I'm gonna put up a bunch of pics with my sliders, etc. They seemed to do a pretty good job, but they sit about 1/2" lower that I would have liked...I may get em cut off and re-attached...keep us informed on your progress...how tough would it be for them to cut the sliders off and re-install??? Thanks again.
