2x4 to 4x4

Hi

I am looking for a V8 4x4 runner.....unfortunately, all of these trucks seem to be on the east coast. Ugh. Im in Ca.

I have no problem finding V8 2wd ones here for a good price, so I am wondering if it is possible to buy the 4x4 componentry from a wrecker and swap in the goods...? I am fairly competent, having recently put a VW TDI into a Suzuki Sidekick.

I am just wondering if the tcase and trans are divorced, and if anyone else has done this before. Surely the price discount on V8 2wd trucks must make some people consider doing this... I would, of course, put in the V6 4x4 system in order to avoid the (IMO) silly full time AWD system the V8 guys have.

Anyone, anyone, Bueller?

Thanks!

I have a 2x4 4Runner and after a lot of research I decided it would be easiest just to search and buy a 4x4

Are you going to be towing..?
Cause if not id say just find a V6.

But most of the parts are bolt in, I know guys that have done 4x4 conversions on prerunner tacomas in a long weekend..

Good luck on your search and Welcome to YotaTech..

Thanks....I do plan on towing, so I want the V8.

I'd like to climb under one, would I have to pull the transmission to add the transfer case?

The guys i know that did the conversions used new transmissions, I think i remember reading somewhere you could reuse the transmission with a new output shaft, but again this is on a 95-04 tacoma...

Why not add a straight axle while you're at it?
