2007 Toyota 4 Runner Sport

I have a 2007 Toyota 4Runner with a 4.0L V6 and an automatic transmission. I parked in the yard and everything was working fine. My wife was going to use it to go downtown and when she tried to leave it would back up but it wouldn't go forward. It snowed a little bit overnight and I think she was trying to shift it in 4 wheel drive. When I got in to try it the 4 wheel drive indicator was flashing green on the back and yellow for the front. When I try to back up it seems to hook up and go backwards OK but when you put in drive it wont move and makes a loud growling noise almost like the 4 wheel drive actuator is not working properly. Does anyone have any ideas that would help me troubleshoot my problems and is it possible to change the actuator without removing the transfer case?
